NVIDIA driver won't install!

I've been having this issue with NVIDIA drivers for my GeForce GTX 460; the driver seems to be doing fine (screen turns black at one point for a few seconds then goes back to normal, not sure if that's intended) but then after a while, it simply stops. It doesn't freeze or give me an error message, it just stops working for several hours.

Any idea what it could be? If I haven't given enough information, please tell me, I'm not awfully great at these things.

Thanks for the attempt, but I'm still encountering the same issue. It's stopping at different points in the "installing NVIDIA update" part and stays there for several hours.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Check Uninstall Programs in Control Panel and delete anything you see listed for NVIDIA.

Go to Device Manager and uninstall your graphics adapter then restart your computer.

Once your computer has rebooted, retry installing your updated driver and make sure you select the Custom/Advanced option. This will uninstall any old driver then install the new one - I believe version 275.53 is the latest version.
