Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS

Hey Carl

Haven't tested the Driver thing yet, however I found something yesterday that might be a huge help for everyone around here having the same problem as us, read this:

NVIDIA Statement on TDR Errors - NVIDIA Forums

Probably worth having forum admins and moderators read aswell :geek:

*Edit: btw, i have tried the driver above 179.48, 179.67 for Win7/Vista x64 which i think its not BETA, didn't work.

Right out from here: Nvlddmkm stopped responding is getting VERY OLD... [Archive] - Page 13 - nV News Forums

radical solution:
just stop TDR-detection and you should not have any resets of your graphics subsystem anymore
start 'regedit' from command-line
go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Con trol\GraphicsDrivers
rightclick 'new' .. dword .. enter name: "TdrLevel" ..doubleklick.. enter value: "TdrLevelOff"

alternative:
increase TDR-Timeout-value to 5 seconds(max possible) from hidden defaultvalue 2sec
start 'regedit'
go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Con trol\GraphicsDrivers
rightclick 'new' .. dword .. enter name: "TdrDelay" ..doubleklick.. enter hex-value: "00000005"

Great find, Jotage; thanks for the info. In my case, I did not get the TDR notification. My screen simply froze and the mouse and keyboard did not respond.

Interestingly enough, I tried most of those tests including an over night memory test and installed another power supply that was known to be good. My system passed every test and the power supply made no difference. I also tried four different drivers including the beta driver. In the end, CompUSA where I bought my card gave me full credit on the card and I bought the 7600 GS . I had one minor problem with the new the new card that TDR reported. An upgrade to the latest driver solved that problem. I conclude there was something wrong with my former card itself though nothing showed up in various tests.

wonder if a downgrade to XP 32bit and using another driver would do the trick, but theres still the horizontal blue squares i get on the screen, looking for fixes but found none at the moment, meanwhile i'll try pulling the TDR countdown up to 5 sec and hope not to fry anything inside the lappy.

Edit: interesting enough, i can get Everest to read my GPU as Nvidia GeForce 7900GS 256MB, however windows doesn't.

I've also got Ma-Config installed and it stated the correct GPU, however SystemRequirementsLab had the same "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" on Video, just like Win7's device manager....

Found out through everest that my GPUs Geometrical, Shader and ROP Domain Speeds are at 200MHz but the Original is 375MHz also real clock is at 351MHz and it's original is 500MHz.

Could that be some of the sources of my problem in any way?

I'm afraid that I can't help you there. I know nothing about video cards except what I read here. However, I find it interesting that windows does not recognize the card. Have you tried unistalling the card and then reinstalling it?

not really since my experience with opening up laptops is really none. if it was a desktop would have done that for sure and probably would have vaccummed the whole place aswell :p

Sad news though, talked with a friend of mine who's a really experienced person at IT and Computers and Laptops. He said since i already tried to format and downgrade to Vista, and the horizontal lines were still there, its probably hardware, meaning ill probably have to replace it, could try bringing it into a technician for repairs though.

Problem no 2: IT IS HARD AS HECK TO FIND!!
Searched on about 10 sites already, only newegg had it and they were out of units!!! plus it's one of the few laptop GPU's Nvidia has ceased trading with!

disregard all.

A day later it came back to the way it was, starting to think it has to do with the motherboard's video.

jotage, try these drivers NVIDIA DRIVERS 179.48 BETA i have had great success with them on my inspiron 9400 with the 7900gs card ,keep a constant eye on the gpu temps, the solder on these cards is of very poor quality, the constant cycling of heating and cooling has a detrimental effect causing micro fissures on the circuit board leading to artifacts like you describe :(

Thanks for the info!
However I had this driver installed when everything started, and this was the driver installed when I had it fixed and everything came on a day later.

Will definatelly take it to authorized personell when I have time and see if they can make it work once and for all
Keep me posted though!
**EDIT: Also, I wonder why it displays this driver as compatible with the 7900GS if the 7900GS is not on the supported products list, why?
