I'm thinking of upgrading my Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I am unsure whether to go with Nvidia or ATI. I have an ASUS P5B-VM mobo.

For the most part it's a matter of brand loyalty and preference.

Otherwise it comes down to price for performance, which both AMD and Nvidia are currently about matched for.

Though I'd suggest ATI if you're looking the the mid-range, cheap high performing market.

Not this again....

It is all personal preference.
I have a N260GTX Twin Frozr and love it.
However, the HD5770 would have been a better model for the price. (I had issues with drivers)

If you are looking at the 5770/260 priced cards, go ATI.
Other than that, it is all preference.

Like what's been said, it's all personal preference really and how much you want to spend. A simple upgrade for a decent price would be ATI, but if you do upgrade to one of the newer cards, your current CPU is going to hold it back if you're wanting to play games or something.

you can find GTX 260s for sub 200 all day, some around 150... Having said that, my progression was 8600gt Sli to GTX 260 to Radeon 5850, and the ATI card is 10000x the card the others are, especially being able to use 3 monitors. I do prefer nvidia control panel to Catalyst controller though.

I'm not a ''gamer'' per say, but I do play mw2 and mlb2k10 occasionally.

Start with a budget/price in mind and go from there, you know the drill. :geek:
Whatever you choose, will be the right card at this "time".

It comes down to smart shopping and your needs, someone elses needs/beliefs aren't yours.

Anyway hope you find a solution be it ATI or Nvidia.

+ yep.

Once you have a budget, then you have boundaries.

Also, what sort of performance increase are you expecting with a newer card?

Because as it's been mentioned - your CPU will be a limiting factor to higher-end cards.

Also your current Power Supply will also be an issue ( I assume generic case = generic PSU?)

It really is a preference thing, and loyalty to your preferred company. Anything AMD...OR...NVIDIA is going to be a quality product.

I vote NVidia as well as they are the ones that I have experience with. Normally, I would say that it depends on your motherboard chipset and that the GPU should match (ATI for AMD and NVidia for NVidia), but in your case this is Intel so it doesn't matter. You're always going to get a difference of opinion here, so in the end it is your decision. I note, though, that you already have used an NVidia card in this system so you know it works with that combination. As a result, it may be a case of better the devil you know.

At this time ATI.

Sad Poll result seems like pure fanboy reaction, rather than a marker of what is good right now.

I have an NVidia card but I am not brand loyalist, I just look at what is best, and now ATI has been in the drivers seat for at least half a year, they have revamped almost the complete line and have newer tech in almost every price level.

NVidia only has new technology in their very late, very expensive, very power hungry chips.

Don't buy NVidia right now unless you are die hard NVidia loyalist.
