What are you using to cool you processor? The blue screen is more than likely due to instability which means that you'll probably need to up the voltage. What was the voltage when you got it to run at 3.7? And that is a Black Edition processor, right? So, are you overclocking by way of the multiplier alone? Also, you may need to up voltages for your ram (if it doesn't set automatically by way EPP) and for you Northbridge. But in all that, keeping the processor cool is paramount. You need a very good cooler.

Not too long ago, I tried pushing mine to (anything) over 3.6. I got to 3.8 and BSOD everytime. I got it to run somewhat stable at 3.7 but when I stressed it, it BSOD'd. I had the voltage set to 1.475 @ 3.7GHz. I just wanted to see if I could get a stable run--now I run at stock speed.

Hmmm, I've never seen an MS message suggesting a max cpu speed... How 'bout a screenie of the message...

Otherwise, follow mpcrsc562's lead on this...

i am using what came with the cpu for a cooler and some case fans. in the bios it has some o/c options aside from the multiplier, it also has a 3,5 and7%o/c as well as manual where all you can change is the freq. from 200 to 400

Youre going to have heat issues OCing on a stock HS.

Many of the stock heatsinks are just barely adequate for stock speeds. Much less overclocking.

Raising the CPU speed itself increases heat. Added Voltages increases it even more on top of that.

If i were you I wouldnt OC at all untill you get a suitable cooler on the CPU.

If you must anyway, keep it mild and without vcore increases with the stock cooler.

you should still consider an aftermarket cooler. You can find some nice air coolers such as the CM Hyper212plus, megahelms, tuniq, and many more for 30-70 bucks.

It seems likely that Windows 7, which includes a startup diagnostic, is actually detecting instability your previous OS could not.

Given that you are on a consumer grade CPU with the stock cooler and have just been messing with BIOS settings, I'd be prone to suspect that your overclocking has never worked as well as you thought... You just weren't being warned about it.

I see from your specs you are running AMD, I usually build with AMD... Look into the "Black Edition" CPUs from AMD. As a rule they're "Gamer" chips which will overclock much more readily than the standard low power chips. They aren't that much more expensive (unlike Intel which can get over $1000)...

The second step is to get into better cooling for both CPU and Chipset. NewEgg has a whole line of specialty coolers, including liquid cooling that will support overclocking to various degrees.

I don't overclock all that much. In fact some of my builds are deliberately underclocked, when I know someone is going to use that machine for a long time or it's going to be on 24/7. I find it's fun to play with but really doesn't give much of a performance boost -- except in the Gamer scenario. Overclocking a computer to run MS Office (for example) is just plain silly.

All that said, if you are serious about playing with this I will defer to the others who I'm sure can provide you with far better information than I. I really just jumped in to support a couple of the others who were cautioning you about overclocking with standard edition CPUs and "stock" heatsinks....

i don't know if you guys know much about that chip but the 965 140w is only offerd on newegg in black edition. maybe different on another site but i bought it on newegg, so yes it is the black edition. and have you guys seen this cooler that came with it. it looks like it would be pretty decent for cooling. i don't want to sound like an a$$ i just didn't know if you guys are familiar with this particular processor.

Yep... it's a pretty good cooler even for moderate overclocks... but what you were talking about is not moderate. The coole is half of the equation here. Heat is the enemy you have to passify if you want the system to remain stable.

Frankly if you're going to push a 2.4ghz chip past 3, I'd be recommending water cooling.

this is a 3.4ghz factory and its at 3.9 currently and probably a little on the warm side bit it runs great. i will get a better cooler when payday comes around though. any good inexpensive water coolers to recomend?

They need a bit better cooler.
140W CPU is going to throw off a lot of heat, even at stock.

Put things in perspective, its using 140W at load at stock settings and something like 1.4 - 1.5 Vcore?
When you overclock that all increases, creating more heat.

Thats going to put off some heat, and thats why a sturdier stock cooler. It doesnt mean its suitable for Overclocking however.

AMD makes good chips, but they do run warmer than Intel (even stock) and if Overclocking even more attention should be taken to keep them cool.

Do what you want its your stuff :)
Im just saying stock coolers are simply not designed for Overclocking. Intel or AMD.

Water cooling really isnt needed unless your doing some hardcore OCing.
Not to mention, a water cooling kit that worth having are going to quite expensive.
Most newer, good Air cooler will do just as good as the lower end water cooling solutions for 1/2 the price.

You should also realize that OC'ing a CPU will shorten it's life no matter what you do.

Just cause you can OC it, doesn't mean it's going to last.

Also remember that every chip is just a little different and not all of them take to overclocking....even from the same mfg or product line.

I'm also not big into overclocking either, it's generally a lot of effort and extra cost for cooling which typically only results in a benchmark performance increase and doesn't equate to a whole lot in real world scenarios.

But hey, if you enjoy doing it and you like computers, I understand the compelling need to trying it.

I'm running my Intel Q9550 with a very mild overclock to keep it in a 1:1 timing with my RAM. It probably doesn't equate to any tangible difference, but it makes me happy. And I am able to do this on the stock cooler...so that was another bonus.
