My fairly new laptop (<3 months old) will occasionally shut down while the lid is closed. When I open my laptop when this happens it's already at the boot menu for "windows did not shut down properly." It has so far only happened while the lid is closed and I haven't actually seen a BSOD.

Welcome to SevenForums

Looks like the Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5000 Series Adapter Driver for Windows 7 is causing some problem there. (Older driver that needs to be updated).

Delete remnants of its drivers/older drivers using Driver Fusion/Sweeper and get the latest from Intel Download Center

Follow the tutorial below, it may improve the situation.
Consider using MSE instead of KIS while testing this way. You may however, install Kaspersky back if we know it's not causing problems.
Code:
Start Menu\Programs\Kaspersky Internet Security 2013	Public:Start Menu\Programs\Kaspersky Internet Security 2013	Public

Run the System File Checker that scans the of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:
Free up start-up, nothing except the antivirus is usually needed.
Let us know the results.

I did attempt to upgrade my intel driver from 15.0.0.75 to 15.2.0.19, and I had to roll back because I couldn't log in to any networks with the newer driver (authentication continually failed and credentials were never regarded as valid)

As for sfc /scannow... nothing:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I have turned off USB Selective Suspend...

Well nothing, but the problem isn't all that frequent in the first place, and I've been unable to intentionally trigger it.

I've uninstalled KIS for the time being. :)
If it happens again I'll let you know, thanks for the help!
