I have recently re-installed Wind 7 64-bit SP1 and all updates (well, except the two I removed because of the windows ads). All seems fine, but whenever I've worked for a short time in Word (no matter which of the two I've used) my cursor goes into circle mode and won't cease. The only way to get it to stop is shut down Word. I've updated all the drivers for network, keyboard, marble mouse, both versions of Word and nothing seemed to help.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thx, LafnSu

Is the problem only in one document or in all documents? The "circle mode" suggests something is running in the background or that Word is having a problem with the document or the auto-save feature.

I have a question and of course I don't know the answer.

Does having Word 2013 and 2007 on the same computer at the same time cause problems?

Will they argue with each other?

Depends on what the default is for opening documents, and it would also enable a bunch of Office features for 2013 that 2007 would not like. So it may be possible that it's looking for a specific plugin and doesn't understand the updated library.

The only issue I've run into is that both versions had to be 32-bit, seems there's problems in having the 64-bit version installed. Office 2010 is the first version to be offered as either 32-bit or 64-bit, same for later versions.

Why have both Office programs at the same time?
Good question, Office 2007 really wasn't much different from later versions but was the first with the "ribbons" scheme so some folks liked 2003 better until more comfortable with 2007. In my case I wanted to keep Office FrontPage 2003 but 64-bit Office 2010 wouldn't allow it so I went with Microsoft Expression Web 4.

I have both on board only because I had 2007 originally and when I got the laptop it came with 5 licenses for Office, so I upgraded on this machine as well...but since it's only a 1 year license I'd kept 2007 around in case I did not want to renew. I almost always choose 2013, and never run both at the exact same time. Also, it is in every single document whether it's been opened or started from New > even without a template. That was one of the reasons I thought it might be interference with keyboard/mouse, etc. Yes, it seems something is running but I haven't any earthly idea what....sigh. Ironically enough, I realized that other Office programs don't have the same behavior (Excel, One-Note)...scratching my head I am!

Thanks for all the feedback to you all. I appreciate it.

Cheers, LafnSu

A suggestion.
Use msconfig/Startup and make sure that the Office products are not checked.

What this will do is make sure neither Office will startup at boot and run in the background when you are not using them.
They will work when you choose and tick on the one you want to use.

Okay, so I did this, and I have a backhanded solution, so thank you! After unchecking the office products startups, I rebooted. I immediately opened Word and had no active cursor behavior by opening many documents. I then started a new document and tried to print. As soon as I invoked the printer I had the active cursor behavior, and then I tried opening other documents, and it wouldn't stop. I closed Word, exited the printer (which boots automatically) and didn't have the same behavior, was in fact normal cursor.

So while not the exact solution, it brought me to know it was conflicting with my printer....so now to search for the driver I need for my Canon MX882 - don't laugh, old printers need love too! THanks for the help Layback, I appreciate it.

Your welcome.

I don't like buying new printers either. You never know if the new one is going to work better that the old one.

LOL...I hear that! Besides I'm cheap and won't replace until it absolutely dies....it's 4,000 some pages past life expectancy now...slow but steady, sort of like me:p

Going back to the original question, I am having the same problem with word 2010. It happens with all documents and sometimes in Outlook. I have checked talk manager to see what else is running, but that provided no answers. Of course there are many things running in the background, but which might be causing the problem I have no idea.

It may well be a conflict with printer, keyboard, mouse...mine was printer, but I'm thinking any device that you use with the program would be the first suspects.
