While windows is downloading its update, the windows update icon will appear in the tray, when you mouse over it, it will tell you how many percent is complete and when it is done, it will disappear right?

However, during windows update for PC 1 the windows update icon appeared and after a short while it disppeared, thinking that the updates has finished downloading, this PC is then disconnected from the internet.

The same thing happened to PC 2, the windows update icon appeared and after a short while it disappeared, but after a while the windows update icon appear again and say that its updating, after checking the event viewer it seem PC 2 has already downloaded 12 updates. In other words, this PC by right should have already finished the download. However, the icon shows that it only just started downloading.

After which I checked the event viewer for PC 1 it seem like even though the icon has disappeared, it is actually still downloading the updates. Is this a normal thing? If you were disconnected from the internet during windows update will it affect anything?

I never place too much reliance on notification icon numbers - they seem to me to be pretty random.
It's always better to open up Windows Update and just leave it running in the background to do its thing, and have a look there.
