Odd question..."User" folder

Alrighty...I have a possibly unique problem. I know what I did wrong, just don't know how to remedy it, so here goes...

I have two internal hard drives. I was in the process of transferring my music, pictures and documents folders from "My Name" (folder) to the other hard drive via "Move" in "Location Properties." I ended up moving "Music" to D:\, without creating another folder/partition (??-not quite sure how that works). Anyway, now I have my D: drive showing up in "My Name" but do not want it there....but the computer thinks it's part of "My Name" because my music is there (though no longer, as I've removed all files and even formatted for good measure).

What can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have system restore turned on, restoring to an earlier point in time before you made these changes might fix this back to the way it was. It's worth a try because it's very easy to try.

To use system restore, simply type "system restore" in start, search and hit enter, then select the most recent restore point before you made the changes you don't like, and click Ok and wait for it to do its thing which will involve a reboot.

I was about to resort to that...I'm playing with some other things right now (and crossing my fingers!) but if that doesn't work my next step was restore....

Yep, I meant System Restore resorted back to the original "My Name" folder setup. I would think there would be an easier way to do it, though...:sarc:

I'm not sure it's clear what is going on here. When you move the location of a user folder via the location tab, the link under your username will take the name of the new folder in this case the D drive. Nothing was changed except where links to this folder should point and the name of the folder.



You will notice that in the links under my username(Gary) there is no documents folder. This is because the documents folder has been moved to E:Scary Gary's via the location tab and the documents folder has taken the name of the new fold (or drive in this case). If you look at the bottom of the pic you will notice that there are no documents, music etc folders because they have all been moved via the location tab.

Hope this doesn't make things worse.

Here's how I see what happened, though I'm no expert...or even intermediate, for that matter!...

I moved my Music to "D:\" rather than to a folder in D, so "My Name" though "D" was now "My Music," and put a link to it in "My Name." However, when I moved everything back around, I couldn't get rid of D from the icon list. There weren't any options to delete or move it...

Just for future reference, if you had right clicked on the D: drive and selected properties/location tab(it has a location tab now because it is actually the music folder in disguise)/restore default, it would have returned things to normal. When it asks if you want to move the contents of the folder say no or it will move all your music to C:\Users\your username\music. No reboot required.

Having run into similiar issues I found the following solution:

To move user folders to a different drive first create temp folders in the new location (eg MyDocuments, MyMusic etc.). Then go to the user folders on your C drive and using the properties and location menus select the corresponding folder. Select yes to move files. The operation will correctly rename the temp folders you created to My Documents, My Music etc. with the correct icons and automatically update links to libraries and "me" folders. Apparently you cannot relocate user folders in root folders. I wish I had known this yesterday
