I use the quick launch buttons on the task bar for launching all of my regularly used programs.

Recently, something odd has started to happen that has never happened before and I'd like to get things back the way they used to be

Firefox (16.0.2) is my primary browser (Windows 7 home premium SP1)

Now, when I open FF, it's icon(s) appear on the far right of the quick launch icons instead of in the middle of the row where I have all my browser quick launch icons.

If I remove all FF icons from the bar and then put a new one in - in the correct location - when I open a FF window, a 2nd FF icon appears on the far right of the quick launch icons.

If I open other FF windows, they stack under the icon that's to the far right - in the wrong location.

Any ideas? Probably just a setting that got trashed.

Do the quick launch icons for your other programs respond normally? If so, you might try removing the FF quick launch icon again, uninstalling FF, re-downloading, and reinstalling, just to see if that has any effect. You wouldn't lose any settings.
Good luck- Small things like this are annoying!

The IE icon does perform normally, so it does seem that it might be FF. My concern with removing and reinstalling FF is that there are a ton of settings that are perhaps more important to me than where the icon sits on the bar, and I think it's likely some or many of them would get messed up and I'd be worse off.

I understand your concern about losing your settings, although this should not happen with a re-install. (Through umpteen updates of FF I've never lost my settings.) As a less drastic approach, you could simply re-install a new download over your current install. In either case you could protect your settings by first backing as described here:
Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles | Firefox Help
Still, you might prefer to live with the minor anomaly!

If suggestions from marsmimar and gini doesn't fix your issue, can you post a screen print?

Now, when I open FF, it's icon(s) appear on the far right of the quick launch icons instead of in the middle of the row where I have all my browser quick launch icons.
I don't understand the issue and what you see :( :o

My primary browser is FF, I have FF pinned to the taskbar, and I use my own (W7 64) toolbar rather than Quick Launch.
So my setup is similar to yours, and i don't have issue(s).
Can you create your own custom toolbar and see if you have the same problem?

In my screen print the "W7 64" toolbar is what i use for "Quick Launch" programs...
Here is what i see...can you post a screen print showing the problem you see?

Is FF pinned to the taskbar on the left?
- what you pointed to on the left in the screen print

Then when you open a new FF window it adds a new icon in the taskbar ???
- on the right in your screen print

Also, I don't see Quick Launch or any toolbar in your screen print...

Maybe your "Taskbar Combine icons" is the issue...
See if you have "Always Combine" selected.

Here is what i have for taskbar properties, can you post yours?

This is the way my task bar looks now. (Note, I use "pin to task bar" rather than the actual "Quick Launch" toolbar). The two programs open in the image are SnagIt and Firefox. There is no second icon for FF on the task bar.

With Firefox open on the right side, unpin Firefox on the left side then pin the 1 on the right side and move it over to the left.

Right click the taskbar and click Toolbars.
Make sure you don't have any toolbars checked if you're not using toolbars.

You can also Right click the Taskbar and unlock the Taskbar.
Maybe when it is unlocked you can move things around ???

Actually, I can move the icon.
I can drag it from the right side to the right location.
But then, when I open it, the 2nd icon appears again on the right.
