Odd very odd

So I recently replaced my 2.6 Phenom X4 9950 BE with a wicked 3.4 Phenom II X4 965 BE. It went in without a hitch other than the shut down with this new chip is problematic most of the time the screen goes blue and when the case should go black it's fans and led's still glow making me have to force down the system. Does anyone have an idea why this could be happening? Any thoughts would be appreciated !

First thing I would look at is if your bios is updated. The Phenom IIs are a different core series altogether than the Phenoms.

When you say blue screen, are we talking a BSOD or just a plain blue screen? What are you doing when this happens?

Just blue screen not BSOD.......though I have had an on going BSOD on start up. So it appears at opposite ends of my computing I'm all blue....lol:roflmao:

Bios was updated prior to installing the new chip. Using MSI Live Update 4 and updated to v2.80

So when you shut it down and get this solid blue screen, your case fans are still operable but is anything else still running (hard drives, heatsink fan)? Does it do it when you put it to sleep, restart, or hibernate it?

I just need a bit more clarification.

It's very difficult to tell what is left running and what's turned off. I'll pull the case out tomorrow and remove the side and set it up to see. Watch when I do this the system will likely shut off fine....lol. At this point just listening to the system it seems all fans and my H50 fans along with all fans with leds stay on. But the screen goes blue as the GPU has shut off which leads me to believe the mobo is off??? But I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. It's not the end of the world cause I can always just hard power it down. System is screaming when up which is great and also seams to be booting more consistently on the first or second try. With the 2.6 it was more tries to get a good boot without the BSOD.

Pull your GPU and do a full boot/shutdown using the integrated graphics on your mobo if you have them.

If everything looks like it's off (heatsink fan off, hard drives not spinning, gpu fan not spinning) but your case fans are still on, your power supply might not be wanting to fully accept the signal from the mobo to turn off.

Let us know what is actually turning off before we proceed.

Did some reading and first tried to end a Nvidia process titled nvvsvc.exe with limited success. But with more reading I found that by turning off my windows automatic update, I'm now able to shut down without a hitch. I'll watch this over the next day or two to just make sure thats it !

I didn't want to mention this yet as it was worst case scenario for every time I've seen this fixed in the field...

Replace the motherboard. Everything will stay on unless the motherboard specifically tells it's attached components (drives, cards, and psu) to turn off. Everything that needs to be done TO shut down has been done (hence the screen turning blue in this case) but the board isn't giving the command to the addons and the voltage pulse to the PSU.

Do you still have your old CPU? Try swapping it back in and seeing if it works. If it works ok, then your CPU is most likely to blame for your troubles.

Also wouldn't hurt to remove anything non-essential and do a startup-shutdown cycle and see what happens.

Non-essentials: extra hard drives, sound cards, network cards, usb devices, non-essential case fans (if you leave the case open when you do the test, you could probably disable all the case fans if you're just doing a quick cycle.

Is the processor overclocked by any chance?

Alright. If you swap the processor and it works just fine, then it may be the processor causing you problems. If it's still new enough to swap out from whomever you bought it from, I would and give it another whirl. If you STILL have the problem, it may be either A) your board has other issues that only arise when the 965 is being used or B) the board can't really handle it for whatever reason.

I'd think it'd be closer to A.

OK stay tuned as I did a W7 repair and things are so far so good. Still have the BSOD on some starts but normal boots about 75% on second try. System is shutting down better but more time is needed.
