Office 2010 or 2013

alright guys I am in need of your opinion i have heard good things about both Office 2010 and 2013, but I am not sure which one is better, I can get both through my college, but I am just not sure which one would be best to use thanks guys i really appreciate it a lot

You better check into the fine points about the licensing terms.

Including these questions:

Can the product be installed on more than 1 PC at a time and are there any restrictions as to the type of PC: desktop, laptop, etc?

Is the product restricted to the first PC to which it is installed or can it be installed to any single PC in the future, without restrictions?

Do you get a factory-made retail disc or just a download of some type that must be burned to a disc?

Are there recurring fees, such as a monthly or annual charge? Or do you pay just once and never again?

It seems that Microsoft's goal in the long term is to drive everyone toward recurring fees, like a subscription that must be renewed for the software to continue to function. You can avoid that with Office 2010 if you buy the right type of license. I'm not sure about 2013.

And you need to understand which of the Office applications are included: Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, etc, etc. There are numerous packages with different names.

Functionally, you won't find major differences and can become accustomed to either.

I'd worry most about the licensing details.

Or the 2 computers you might own in 2016?

If you change the motherboard on "PC 1" and then reinstall Office, does that count as "PC 2"? Or is that still "PC 1"?

The download idea should be OK, just make sure you keep the download even after you burn it to a disc. Along with the Product Key.

Office 2010 and 2013 are quite similar in most ways. Take your pick if the licensing for each version is identical.

Hi there

I don't happen to like the White (not really customiseable) option in Office 2013 -- I'm sticking with Office 2010 -- can't really find any reason to upgrade for what I need and it's supported till 2020 -- by which time I'll either be 2 metres under the ground, long since retired, or probably using something totally (non Ms) different as the Linux clones get better and better.

thanks guys for your help, I have chose to stick with Office 2010 so I don't have to worry about the stupid crap with Office 2013 and I don't like some the way things are done on there I think it was basically designed for Windows 8, also does anybody know if the mainstream end of support date is the same as Windows 7 or not

Office 2010 will reach EOL (End of Life) on 10/13/2020; Win 7's is 1/14/2020.

There are several things I didn't like about Office 2013, enough so that, even though I was happy with Office 2007 at the time, I upgraded to 2010 so I would have a decent version of Office until the EOL of Win 7.

Having run the Office products since before it was a suite called Office, I like 2010. 2013 has some funkiness to it. I have that too, but choose not to use it.

I use Office 2013 Pro & have had no problems & I have got used to the white background. I suppose I look mainly for functionality rather than looks.

Functionality is important but, when has to stare at a screen for extended periods, looks become just as important. That white background is hard on the old eyes and the flat appearance makes selections blend in together.

Hi all

Outlook in 2013 is a lot better at connecting to Hotmail and AoL etc. Also I find the file format support has improved but not enough to justify an upgrade from 10 to 13. Personally, I would choose 2013 if you have a no cost option.

Something else to keep in mind is Office 2013 only has single computer license versions available. Office 2010 Home and Student had "Family Packs" that had licenses for three computers for very little more than a single version.

When 2013 first came out, it was treated the same as an OEM OS; one couldn't transfer the license to another computer. If the computer you put it on died, say, six months later, you were out of luck. That raised such an uproar from consumers, M$ relented and loosened up that restriction. That came too late for me; when I saw how 2013 looked when it came out and learned about the original transfer restriction, I caught a 2010 Family Pack on sale, even though I had a good Family pack of 2007 (which I wound up giving to someone whose son needed it for school but couldn't afford to buy it), to make sure I had a good version of Office until Win 7's EOL.
