Office 2013 now transferable

A couple weeks ago, I posted this blog to clarify the new Office 2013 licensing terms. Based on customer feedback we have changed the Office 2013 retail license agreement to allow customers to transfer the software from one computer to another. This means customers can transfer Office 2013 to a different computer if their device fails or they get a new one. Previously, customers could only transfer their Office 2013 software to a new device if their PC failed under warranty.

While the license agreement accompanying Office 2013 software will be updated in a future release, this change is effective immediately and applies to Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013, Office Professional 2013 and the standalone Office 2013 applications. These transferability options are equivalent to those found in the Office 2010 retail license terms. The updated text is as follows:

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the "licensed computer." You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement before the transfer. Any time you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer and you may not retain any copies.

Yep nice to know and would this cover all versions of Office? (07 & 10 in particular) as I am constantly shuffling between machines.

Plus it is good move for Microsoft in the light of some fairly decent "aftermarkets like Kingsoft now available

Strange that cos I keep getting those rotten and pestering non valid messages especially for the 07 as I have had to transfer it at least four times on my main laptop alone

Depending on the version you have, you can have it installed on either 1 or 3 computers at a time. If you didn't unauthorize earlier versions, M$ considers them to be still active. In that case, you have to call M$ and get any inactive installations deactivated. I had my copy of Office 2007 family pack (which allows up to three installations) installed on a total of four of my computers, then gave it away to the son of a friend when I bought Office 2010. The last time I installed 2007 on one of my computers (the fourth installation), I had to call M$ and have the previous installations deactivated. It is now working just fine on a fifth computer.

Usually, retail versions of 2007 and 2010 (with a disk) are family packs that can have up to three simultaneous installations. Downloaded versions you buy a key card for are usually for only one installation (a ripoff, if you ask me).

Yep actually I had it on three machines the problem child my main Toshiba had one HDD die the 07 reinstalled without any problems but then when the second went south I explained to Microsoft the situation and that was fine and then the SSD I had to redo the complete install again but then came the messages not on this machine but on my Sandy Bridge. So each time I get that activate now message I just ignore as best I can - luckily I don't use the Sandy Bridge for much now so am not having to put up with that messages.

I have 2010 on the rest now and am trying out that Kingsoft on an old XP I have converted to a multi drive machine. I was just curious as to what would happen should another HDD let go in a machine I use a fair bit.
