My company recently made Office 2013 ProPlus available to its employees through the Home Use Program --so I went on line and purchased a license.

When I did this for Office 2010 and got the email from MS, their link was to a download of an ISO file from which I was then able to burn a DVD.

But this time, the download is an executable and the name (Setup.x86.en-US_ProPlusRetail_[product key]_act_1.exe) implies that it is an installer.

I really don't want to INSTALL it right now; instead, I want to download it and burn a DVD -- and install it later.

So, has anyone else tried this download and found out WHAT the installer program actually does?

I don't know for your particular product, but general experience with Microsoft and Digitalriver tells me the following. If that file is about 400-500 KB than there are two possibilities:

Upon its start it will download a particular iso file from the Internet
OR
It will download a msi setup files from the Internet.

Interesting thing is that your file has a product key in its name. Does that mean product key is integrated? I do not have an answer for you at this moment. That would be kind of you if you post back about this issue after you try to install it. Whenever this will happen.

Thanks for the feedback.

That was my guess, too -- but I'm going to hold off running it because I'm not ready to switch over to Office 2013 yet. I just bought it because, for $10, it's worth it -- and I wanted to do that before my company ran out -- as there are only so many licenses available.

I'll get back to you when I install this and let you know what happened.

I did that - correct, it will INSTALL on the computer used to download. I know it doesn't state that anywhere, and the only clue comes AFTER YOU PAY FOR THE PRODUCT and reach the final download page. Even there the only clue is the "install" button. I needed to install on a computer without Internet access.

I called MS support and spent a lot of time with them. This was the result:

"Sorry, that's how we do it now. There is no ISO you can download. You should have ordered the backup DVD (for more money) and used that. If you uninstall the new installation, you will not be able to reinstall it as the license will show it as being used. You can call customer service for a refund."

I got the refund.

GEWB

Thanks for confirming. I got that $10 offer as well and when I downloaded, noticed it seemed to just be an installer - about 500KB. As I won't be installing just yet, I went back onto the email offer and purchased the DVD for each which I am assuming contains the full package. I for one will probably install it on a test machine before settling on a proper home for it so it sounds like uninstalling it and re-installing on a different machine is going to be fun.

Thanks for the info, folks. I went back in and ordered the DVD. Good thing to find this out now while it was still available.

Hi guys,

I am having an extremely frustrating time with this: what is actually on the backup DVD?? Does the backup DVD have a "traditional" install on it?

Other online info I'm seeing is contradictory on this. This click-to-run installation is very much pissing me off. I'm desperately trying to figure out how to get a traditional installer so that I can pick which directory to install to and pick which parts of the Office suite I want to install. This click-to-run garbage just installed everything without giving me any options.

I'm desperate for the answer...

Thanks!

fr0zensphere. I am using the retail DVD version of Office Pro 2013 Click to Run. I have just had a look at what's on the DVD & there is no provision to be able to install individual programs from what I can see as there are a whole lot Zip files on it, with no reference to what they are.

I don't think you can install it within another directory as I think it has to be installed directly onto your main C drive.

The DVD starts the installation & gets to a certain stage & then the balance is downloaded from MS to complete the installation.

Just some further thoughts on this. When I stated that Office 2013 gets installed on your drive it gets installed in Program Files & you don't have any other options as there is no Installer. The only option you have from the DVD is either the 32 bit or 64 bit versions.

Being able to select what Office Programs you want installed is not available as far as I can see. The only alternative would be to just purchase each one as required, but I suppose that is a lot more expensive. MS probably assume that most people will buy the standard version if they don't want Access etc. or the professional version if they do.
