Office pulled from Microsoft Store, MSDN, TechNet.

Three weeks ago, a federal appeals court ordered Microsoft to stop selling Word with Custom XML as of today due to patent infringement, and now we see that the company has struggled to meet the deadline for its many SKUs and versions. Microsoft previously said that it would be able to meet the kill date for Office 2007.

On the Microsoft Store, there are 32 results when you choose to display All Office Products, but the majority of them are not available for purchase today. Generally speaking, all individual Office applications excluding Word are still being sold. In terms of Office suites, all of which include Word, availability depends on how quickly Microsoft has rolled out the versions without custom XML. For example, at the time of this writing, Office Standard 2007, Office Small Business 2007, Office Standard 2007 Upgrade, Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition, and Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition are not available, while Office Ultimate 2007 Office Professional 2007 and Office Professional 2007 are available.

i4i patented their technology that couldn't exist without Microsoft's Compound Documents APIs/interfaces that Microsoft built into Windows over two decades ago that's still the core technology used in various files from Microsoft's Office, CAB files, XPS and a bunch of other file formats...

Office 2007 will let you include a file — any file — inside the main Office document using the Compound Documents APIs and interfaces. The file will stay in its original form and will not be changed by any MS Office applications anywhere. Parts of the file may be displayed within the main document if you create an appropriate “relationship from the main document.” This is equivalent to the i4i patented mechanism, which explicitly describes the “raw content” and the “metacode map” that Office uses to create a relationship between the Compound Documents and itself.

Luckily, i4i only patented it in relation to Office documents. If Office and Word was removed from the patent language then I would expect a massive re-engineering of COM, Windows and multiple file formats would be taking place right now and take Windows compatibility and the majority of current software with it... I understand why its taken them longer to fix other Office builds, Compound Documents are an integral part of a lot of Microsoft file formats and it doesn't help that Office documents are solely xml based on Compound Documents.
