I think that the free VMWare player can not run x64 hosts, for that you'll need VMWare Server, so install the latest Oracle VirtualBox and mount it there. VirtualBox can use vhd format, it doesn't have to be VirtualBox's own vdi format.

Inaccessible Boot Device is what that BSOD means =/ Is it not possible to boot directly from that HDD in a test machine?

Is there a way to disable devices in VirtualBox. I think this is the audio card. I don't need audio.

Here's an idea, too:
Some time ago I had problems to mount an XP vhd created with Disk2vhd. I then used Macrium Free to create an image of that system, and it mounted without problems.

I do not know how much time and patience you have, but it could be worth to try. You could also create an image using Windows own Backup and Restore application.

Have to go to bed, it's 3:55AM here ;)

No need to do research...

Go to that hdd's windows\system32 and do a search for .sys files...

You will come up with a lot .sys files. Have to do some work to identify the friendly name of those driver files...Those are the drivers installed on that computer....

We talked about this issue of yours with Martin, and came to one possible solution that is at least easier than to go manually through all driver files.

How about you asking complete system specifications of that computer the HDD belongs? Every hardware component, every attached device, from chipset and processor to external devices. Then simply check the Interweb for latest drivers for all those components and devices. Can't go too much wrong doing this?

Kari that won't really work either. You will find that a good portion of those .sys files in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder have no bearing on the hardware installed, and are only in there if needed for compatibility reasons. I know if I look in mine I can find at least a half dozen or so various AGP drivers (Nvidia, ATI, one for Uli, etc), which while there are never loaded as there is no AGP slot on my motherboard (as well as a couple of those Broadcom drivers, and again nothing from Broadcom on my computer at all).

P.S. WindowsStar while it might seem like a good idea to pre-load the drivers for the other computer on a clean install, it won't happen as most if not all the necessary driver installers won't install anything as the hardware isn't present. About the best you can hope for is to find out exactly which drivers will be needed, and leave all the installers in a folder on the desktop for the other person to install once the drive is put back.

One more route to could follow is that all loaded drivers are included in the registry ( should be in the system hive)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase

plus maybe a few other locations

Do you have access to an offline registry editor?

If not you can import the hive into your working test machine ....
