Solved OGV Converter Freeware Software

Since I have ~ 200 ogv files that I need to convert or redownload, I was hoping to save the time of redownloading, but so far I have not found a converter that is able to handle these files. Daniusoft nor Format Factory doesn't see them, and when I tried using Freemake, it froze the system on the first attempt, and on the second and third, it showed no progress for 5-7 minutes, then announced completion instantly, but the output files were minuscule and inoperative. Anyone know of a converter that will actually work on ogv?

Just for the heck of it and after reading your query, I converted a .vob file to .ogv using OGG Video Converter http://www.ogg-converter.net/free-download-ogg-video-converter.htm -shareware. will convert only 10 files free - and used it to convert to .vob again. Then I used XMedia Recode to convert the .ogv file to avi and vob file. All were successful.



A. vob to ogv with OGG Video Converter
B and C. ogv to avi and vob with XMedia Recode
D. ogv to vob with OGG Video converter.

(Please do not ask me any further questions. I am not a conversion specialist. )

Glad that it meets your requirements adequately. Just curious to know to which format you wanted to convert and converted.

Ogv to most anything that Movie Collector will detect. Currently, I'm using mp4, because of it's small size and it's detection.

I felt that I should add, that even though XMedia worked well at first, today it started giving me some trouble. When adding the first file that it is to convert, it would play just a moment of the audio, and maybe the video, because I didn't have the chance to select the preview tab before it froze the system, requiring a forced reboot. When this happened several times in a row, I decided to reinstall it, hoping that would fix it...I doubt that it did, because as before, it played a moment of audio on the first file, but didn't freeze things up.

I went ahead and loaded it up with 10 files, since that when it works, it works well. However, I'm not going to use it again on W7. I may try installing it on XP and hope that it feels more at home there.

Whichever file gives trouble with XMedia Recode, try it with OGG Video Converter. (The shareware can convert only 10 files free). This may help isolate the problem to check whether the file itself is a problem.

Next there are some settings in the Video tab. I have no idea what these settings do - there is no exhaustive guide in English - but what I have understood is some files may need a different level setting. More than that I am unable to throw any light on it.

Yesterday I just played around converting some small .vob files (music tracks) to mkv and all went on well. But when I tried to convert to M2TS the resulting file could not play the video in WMP or Power DVD. I presume it requires more in-depth knowledge of the various settings and video compression methodology or I need to change some settings in the Shark 007 codecs. I left it at that since conversion as I have said already is not my cup of tea.

As far as I have been able to tell, it is not any particular file that causes the problem. It is the first one loaded into the program, right after initiating the program. If it only chirps a moment, and then remains silent, it will continue without a problem, but too ofen the audio continues indefinitely, while everything else freezes up. Since my last post, I completed the first batch of 10 files, and now am running another 12. On this last batch there was no chirp at all, so it is good to go, until it is shutdown and later restarted.

I wish that I could mark this thread unsolved, because I have found that XMedia has much more serious issues than I thought. When I convert a batch of files, and then Go to the output folder, I may find some or all of the files that it said that it processed missing, even though while monitoring it's progress, there is no hint of the problem. This on top of the fact that too much of the program is in German, like the EULA, help files and some dialog boxes, does not help increase my confidence in it.

I have now decided to abandon it altogether, and continue looking for a replacement...if there are any other idea?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that on one batch of files, which it seemed to methodically process, that instead of proceeding with the next file, when finishing the last, that it continued processing the last, and the output folder contained 2 or 3 copies of the same file.

With few exceptions, the bane of almost all freeware is inadequate documentation. In this case it is all in German.

That said, I have read many user reviews on XMedia Recode and it is adjudged as one of the best freeware converters and a must for any video conversion enthusiasts.

Lack of documentation for proper understanding of its usage may be the cause of your frustration. It is hard to believe that it could delete existing files unless they are overwritten. When you do repeat conversions of the same file there is a setting that you can check not to overwrite.And it looks like there is no other prolific user/s of XMedia Recode here.

I believe that paid software always have the advantage of a proper documentation and support and always better. If you do not find any other freeware with which you may be happy, then the only option is to go for OGG Video Converter.

Yes, there is an option to either overwrite or add duplicates by numbering them, and I selected the latter option. Therefore it should not be overwriting anything, nor does that appear to be the case. The options are fairly simple, so I doubt that it is something that I can do anything about. There are just some monkeys wrenching around inside the program, and they are unpredictable.

Thanks, but I "think" that I have finished converting my .ogv files, but I have installed it anyway...just in case. I also installed Super©, which was posted right after the one regarding Oxelon, for the same reason. I suspect that I will find occasion to try them both in the not too distant future.

I just thought that I should mention for the benefit of anyone reading this thread, that my firewall just popped an alert that the uninstaller.exe in this program's folder was a trojan. I should have taken a screenshot of the alert, but I didn't think about it in time, and the name given for the trojan is not something that I can remember.

It seemed odd that a trojan would be in an uninstaller, because that would only be executed upon uninstalling the program. It is possible that it was a false alert, but I didn't like XMedia that much anyway, so I had the firewall remove the file.

Obviously, it was not needed for uninstalling of the program, because that went of normally using Programs And Features.

Anyone else using Xmedia Recode may scan and report as a double-check.They are advised to make a specific scan, since any report that it may contain malware could not be brushed aside lightly.

I must post a retraction of what I stated in regard to XMedia. Due to the fact that I had to backup with an image, which predates the XMedia installation, the same alert occurred as before, so I took a screenshot of it. Although the file path is compressed, it is to a folder for Layer III Audio, which preexisted my Xmedia installation. The only answer to this is that I must have placed it there by mistake. So the trojan is only applicable to Layer III Audio, not XMedia.

Thanks for reverting back with your finding. Misplaced identities and priorities are very common. It is always a good practice to scan any file downloaded from the internet with a good antimalware program.

About two or three months back when I updated my open source Mediainfo program, MSE identified the OpenCandy in it as a malware. I had been using Mediainfo for ages. Very reluctantly I uninstalled it and went back to an earlier version without the malware.

However I continued to track anything with OpenCandy and soon came across the news that OpenCandy had taken their case with Microsoft that it is harmless and Microsoft removed it from the "malicious" list. I reinstalled the recent version of Mediainfo. MSE no longer puts up an alert.

I also understand that Audacity, Media Coder, Bittorrent and some other programs also use OpenCandy.

The problem that I have with using software that has been marked as malware at any point, is that I sometimes feel that the decision whether it is or not, is more of a political one, than an objective one. Unless it involves a software program that I really am attached to, I tend to remove it and not look back, regardless of whether it is later white listed or not.

Very true. I did want to put that in my post but couldn't put it so effectively as you have done and so left it open. You effectively echoed my sentiments on the issue. It all depends on one's attachment to the program in question,

Edit: Anyone who installs any of these programs and does not know the previous history will have no dilemma or decision-making involved. In that sense knowledge is nuisance.
