Oh noes!! [Bootmgr]

well, i was on my windows 7 computer, and it needed a restart... so i i restarted it.. but it said something like

failed to load bootmgr
press ctrl+alt+del to restart

so i did so, same error message.... so how would i fix this?
am i going to have to re-install, and if not... how would i fix....

by the way, windows 7 is not loading.. this is all in my bios

First, make sure you are trying to boot from the right drive. Boot from your installation DVD and choose Startup Repair. If it doesn't work, say so, because I went through the same thing. Also, make sure the partition it is installed on is marked as active.

alright alright, first off, yes, i am booting from the right drive, second, how would i mark the partition as active if i i cannot log onto windows????

boot into your installation disk, open a command prompt
1. Enter "diskpart" and hit enter
2. Type "list disk"
3. Type "select disk [whatever number of the windows disk]
4. Type "list partition"
5. Type "select partition [whatever the partition number is]
6. Type "active"
restart the computer, and boot your disk again, and select startup repair

1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

Then enter these commands -

Bootrec.exe /FixMbr

Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

After done reboot.
If that doesnt work repeat the above but before reboot type -

Bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force

yes yes, but something rather queer is happening... when i put the installation disk in... guess what freakin error message pops up? cannot load bootmgr ect ect

Use a third party boot disk ( ubuntu live cd ) to completely format your drive, then re-install Windows 7...

+1 1/2 back up yer data and format..... you know that is what you're going to have to do ... you just havent admitted it to your self yet..

His original post suggests that his boot order was not properly set to boot from the CD drive, thus the missing boot mgr error. Once this is corrected, he will be able to format the drive before installation..

Because, like an upgrade, using the repair option is not a 100% fix. By formatting the drive, you are ensuring that no garbage is left behind to possibly corrupt the OS.. If the installed hardware is not borked, then a format/fresh install is the only option in the OP case ...

You can restore from the Windows.old folder this creates.

If you were talking to me, my method involves a clean install OVER the old one.
That will not do a full format... But yeah.

Backing up the data needs to be done anyways. I would recommend just backing up from windows so you can restore from it, and wipe the drive and reinstall.

No, it was my mistake, I both misinterpreted your statement, and my own solution.

I sort of forgot about wiping (formatting) the drive. So I agree, backup then wipe and clean install.
