The popular technology website Slashdot plumbed new depths on Tuesday with a post about the terrible DRM situation in Windows 7. Proving that some sites will publish just about anything as long as it's anti-Microsoft, the post enumerated the DRM restrictions that Windows 7 apparently inflicts on the honest and upstanding computer user.

What was claimed? Well, some guy decided that he wanted to crack his (legally purchased, no doubt) copy of Photoshop on his Windows 7 install. Windows 7 then sprung into life to break his crack, defend Photoshop's virtue against his unwelcome advances, protect a load of random DLLs from deletion, and open up the firewall so that Adobe could see that he was up to no good. Yup yup. To add insult to injury, Windows 7 then crippled the dude's sound card. Or something.

i would approach the article with caution...people file legal papers about that kind of thing now... if the originator knew how to install hacked software, he knew how to prevent the op system or other party software from accessing the net legitimately or not to prevent the go around checks.

while there are legitimate reasons for software accessing the internet on their own, they should only be permitted to do so with your express permission. way too much software especially from third party feel it is their inherant right granted because of installation.

i think it's a whine. legitimate software or not, i think the end result is the same.

its just funny how he thinks that its Windows 7 fault...
its these people that i despise...
they break something and then they dont know how to fix it...
and then they say its the OS fault for something they broke...
and they publish it like on a well know site so people will start believing it...
its even funnier because most people have CS4 here running with no hassle at all (and running it legally i might add with no modifications....)
i think that like ittech that this is just a rant
remember slashdot is mostly made up out of linux users..

An evil friend of mine is running Win7 with a cracked version of Photoshop CS3. He told me it was the only keygen Win 7 has let him run. The others are met with a message that he doesnt have permission to run it . He now runs them with XP and copies the serial numbers to use in 7.

Well, software piracy is something of a grey area in my opinion. Photoshop, well yeah i have used a cracked version in the past. I liked it so my mrs bought it for my birthday. But the thing is that whilst i appreciate the fact these companies have to make money i sometimes cant help but see why software piracy exists. If companies did not charge so much then im sure people would legit buy it.
having said that im sat running 7022 which is a leak. So they irony of it all lol

Yeah, thats my POV also. I usually buy my utilities, but when prices are excessive and my usage is infrequent i enter into the black zone.
But installing first in a VM configured like your host is maybe a bit safer

There's no way on earth i'm going to pay more then around 100 euro for win 7 for example, when an OEM version costs half that.

If Microsoft is setting itself up as the arbiter of legality or fair use, they're asking for an onslaught of hacking to override their 'built-ins'. Or a lack of new product sales. Win 7 doesn't do enough better or well enough, to warrant this truncation of personal liberty.

This is the 'free' copy, I wouldn't pay for such a service.

When Nero stops working, and even the on-board disc burner balks at burning some tracks, Win7 is going beyond the pale. Like having a gun that is selective about its targets - perhaps a 'good' thing, but then, why would a gun like that be needed at all?

How did Win 7 do this? Read the article again. The writer is full of sh*t. There is no way Windows did what he said. He's making it up.

I've cracked everything I need to just fine in 7. I should also point out that I own the games but patch the exe's with no-DVD patches and use mini-images because I refuse to sit here like a muppet swapping DVD's when the game content is on the computer in it's entirety!

I try what I want when I want. If it is a crack or a needed keygen, then that is My Business, not the OS to tell me what I may, can or should do. If I like the program and decide that it is what I need, then I pay for it. If I decide to keep it and not pay for it, then that is also My Business.

Don't get me wrong, I buy alot of stuff, but I don't need anyone looking over my shoulder!

Sorry but I treat anything written in slashdot with a pinch of salt since its all news stories written by members of the public and not staff.

I also seem to remember stories around Vista disabling sound cards, but that never happened.

Eh, its this guys dumb fault, blaming the OS seemed to be the easy way out, people like this should be at the bottom of a very deep hole in some place that no one cares about.
