Old Windows Xp Files

Hi All,

I've just completed a custom upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. I hadn't come across this forum before, so I literally followed all the instructions in the Windows 7 software pack and on the microsoft website.

The bit that's confusing me is that supposedly after you've done this, you need to use Windows Easy Transfer to pull in all of your old files and settings, BUT when I go into the new Windows 7 environment, a lot of my old files are there already. And when I try to run Easy Transfer it says there's not enough hard disk space.

I followed the steps to do a disk clean and removed the "Windows Old" file, but the old files are still there and there's not enough space to pull in all my old files using Easy Transfer.

I'm not sure what to do from here. Should I just delete everything on my C drive?

Sorry if this is a really basic question, but any advice would be greatfully received.

We would be in a better position to help if we better understood what happened. A clean install would not have any files from the old OS, when completed and a upgrade would not have a windows.old file. It could be that, I do not really understand your situation or your upgrade/clean screwed up. What I would suggest is make a copy of your present system, you can use the free trial period of acronis to make your copy for no cost, then make a clean install. I think that you will be very happy with the results. If you are not happy, just use the system image, you made, to go back to your current set up.

Many thanks for taking time out for this. I'll experiment with this tonight when I'm back on my home PC. Just one question though: I've deleted my Windows.old file, will I still be able to run another Windows 7 install without any issues?

No problem. Do a clean install. When given the select custom install, then go to advanced and format. Make sure you have made a copy of what you have now so you can go back, if things do not work out with the new install.

Thanks, just looking at Acronis now. Is it just a bootable disk and a backup that I need to perform, there seem to be a lot of options e.g. clone disk, one click back up, start up recovery manager etc etc...

Windows 7 has excellent backup imaging built in. Type backup in the start search box.

Since you are going to clean reinstall, suggest you boot from the installer to get the cleanest install of all, using Custom>Advanced tools to format your drive before installing.

No windows.old folder chasing you there.
