on board (realtek) sound disabled with creative card disabled

I have an creative x-fi installed which I have disabled. The on board realtek (mb is an asus ph67) shows audio input to speakers in control panel but no sound at jacks (front or rear). Does the presence of the Creative SC disable the onboard audio?

Did you remove the Creative drivers? If not, there's probably some sort of conflict.

Did you set the Realtek as the default audio device in the Windows playback properties?

I did not remove the Creative drivers. I disabled the creative card in device manager. I read in other posts that is was easy to switch from one sound device to another simply by changing the settings in controls panel device management sound area. After disabling creative in device manager, those options disappeared from the playback area of sound options. I made the remaining speakers the default and the plalyback from wmp indicated via the sound bars that it was playing back. I switched the headphones to the onboard audio connectors and got nothing. I then enabled creative and got my sound back after switching audio connectors again. M/B is an Asus P8H67-M Pro with the latest driver from Asus. I was thinking there might be a register cell not set correctly or something like that.

I have good sound through the creative now but some additional capability. Is removing/disabling the driver a simple matter?

I suspect you have the on-board audio disabled in the BIOS since you had an audio card installed, well that and fact you said the on-board acts completely dead.
