Solved on some sites, incomplete page loading - both IE and and Chrome

It sounds like javascript, or CSS, that's why I was thinking a block of some sort, ISP, Security programs, or addons. Here's something to try. No harm at all if it doesn't help.

Open an advanced command prompt> Type

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Enter

regsvr32 jscript.dll

Enter

You should get success message after each.

I will try this. Neither Chrome NOR IE can access the base website www.bicycling.com unless I turn OFF Javascript.

I don't recall. Does Chrome use the IE settings to work with???? Javascript is involved here as affecting what won't display but I don't know enough.

Is the javascript code embedded within IE or as it seems to say above from your post, those are separate .dll modules to be used by any software that needs it? So, when I upgraded from IE8 to IE9, technically the jscript.dll might not have been modified for that upgrade?????

I use MSE and the standard Win7 firewall. I've never monkeyed with any ports or security settings of any kind.

Running IE9 with NO add-ons does not change any symptoms.

I would uninstall all versions of Java and see if you ever miss them. If you run across a website that requires Java, then you can decide if the site is worth the risk of having Java installed. If you never needed Java, then you were putting your computer at risk for absolutely no benefit. I need Java, so I have it. You might not need it.

The sites you are working with do use Javascript (as do a lot of websites); but I cannot make much sense out of the variances that you mentioned. Rendering a map only once is weird - that does not sound like certain parts of the site are blocked. After you test your computer at another home, we should know more.

Another option is the XP Mode. If IE8 works in there, then we know that it is not your ISP or your router.

I will uninstall and see.

Also, I won't be testing my (desktop) PC at someone else's home yet until I try their laptop and see. Obviously a hassle to disconnect everything and try it at someone else's house.

Doh! lugging your desktop to another location would be a pain - must have gotten my threads mixed up when I suggested that step.

The javascript examples (linked above) worked prior to any of the changes below....

regsvr32 the 2 dlls. No change.

Turned compatibility mode on for a specific website. No change.

Uninstalled Java. No change.

However, I just clicked on the Windows Update icon in my system tray and it usually shows how many updates are available and how many are hidden. It no longer shows that. Clicking on "search for updates" has it droning on and never completing. Doing what I did above somehow affected Windows Updates?

Unbelievable. Windows Update is broken. I have it to simply list them and not download them. Every day I click the WU icon in the system tray to see if any new updates are available. Clicking on check for updates has the progress bar never end or come back. I stopped and restarted WU service no change. Restarted PC and WU still broken. You've got to be kidding me.

I can not regsvr32 qmgr.dll (WU). Fails.

System restore to last Saturday and all looks better. Ironically, this system restore fixed some software I installed on Saturday. Weirder than weird.

Guess what I did to fix my internet problem?

I decided to connect my PC directly to the netgear router with an ethernet cable. First I disconnected my wireless connection. Connected the ethernet cable and all is 100% back to normal. I have a completely working IE now.

The question becomes: why? Don't laugh but my wireless adapter is a 6-yr old linksys 802.11g??? One of those bigger clunky adaptors about the size of a small external HD. Could it be flaky in some way? Such bizarre symptoms.

Maybe since it's 6 years old, it has a mismatch in encryption type? I've got the router set to WPA-PSK or something like that. Was that encryption type around 6+ years ago?

Interesting. There are no doubt many settings that could be at fault, but why they only blocked some content is strange. The router should have a small switch to reset to defaults? Often accessed through a small hole with a paperclip or similar. Worth a try if you aren't able to use it now. Good thinking Jim

Yes, weird that the blocked content was 100% consistent. Since the router is new to my place and I had the problem from day one, I don't think reset would help. I went through all the screens on the router interface page 192.168.0.1 and saw nothing I could really change or anything that looked incorrect.

I have NO idea why WU got broken uninstalling java and regsvr32'ing those 2 dlls. I don't even want to think about that one.

Oh, ironically, the software from last Saturday that now WORKS because of the system restore, it's the ONLY app I have that needs Java.
