I'm on my phone. I don't know what's happened, trying to reboot it couldn't and launched startup repair - twice. That has failed, I don't know what to do. Trying very hard not to panic. Failing

I was so hoping it was a bad dream.

OK, it's pretty immediate. Tries to boot, a blue screen flashes (too quick to read the text), and then the b/w error screen loads: failed to start, want to run start up repair? I run it, but it fails. Eventually I am taken to HP Recovery Manager.

This offers me System Restore, also Ststem Recovery to factory condition?! I did run a backup c.2 weeks ago, onto an external hard drive, but I am crazy nervous to assume I can actually restore from that - I have never checked.

I hadn't even got to the tools you suggest above, this happened directly after Microsoft Aecurity Essentials ran, found Alureon, instructed me to run Windiws Defender Offline, which found and said it successfully removed, Alureon. I was so hopeful all was good. But this happened, on reboot.

I'm in the middle of a job application, and up aginst a deadline. How scared shoud I be, please please reassure me this is fixable?!

Yes it is fixable . But we would need another PC so you could get the tools that you will require to get the PC fixed.

You will need a flash drive. I am not sure if the Mac will be able to open the files that you need . They're made for Windows .

I just don't have access to a PC, or know anyone near here.

Is choosing a system restore option via the current HP recovery my only option here? Shit, I'm terrified that this is all ruined

Let me know when you're ready. We will need some programs. Do you have a USB flash drive or empty CD-Rs that you could make LIVE CDs ?

I will be bringing back here old laptop and empty USB sticks - can't bun CD's, no. Will collect the WD drive too, as it holds (gods I hope so, at least), a recent complete backup of the broken laptop (although that prob means it also has the ****Alureon hidden in there somewhere, right?!).

It wil take me a couple of hours to get there and back. And I promise I'll stop saying it (I'm a bore!), but I'd be in pieces if facing this without you guys, and for that I am more grateful than you know.

SarahCali,

Please do post your issue in the System Security forum as VistaKing suggested.

Also, please update the current situation...

Q 1. Do you have the Repair your computer option in the Advanced Boot Options menu?

To find out:
Restart the computer.
As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
Is the Repair your computer option listed?

If it is there, just let us know, but please do not do anything with that option.
Actually, do not run any more scans or any program. At this point it will just make things worse.

Q 2. If you do not have the Repair your computer option above, do you have your Windows installation CD/DVD available?

Q 3. I am presuming you have a clean USB flash drive available, and have access to another computer (the old laptop)? Is this correct?

Q 4. Was TDSSKiller rebooting the computer, and, that is as far as you got when the Startup Repair started to show up?

Q 5. Did Startup Repair report anything, and was unable to take care of it. If so, what message did it give you?

Please provide the answers to the above (5) questions in your new post in the Security Forum.
You can just title it: Alureon

See you there!

Fine for me...I'm retired!
Well, this is going from bad to worse (who have I pissed off?!). My old laptop will not power up - I think it is a hard disk problem (the reason I replaced it 15 months ago; since then it was shipped across the country with me, & I think finally gave up the ghost). It sounds as though it can't spin, or something. Whatever it is, it can't help me solve the current, more pressing, laptop death.

So I appear to have only one option - go ahead with the HP Recovery. My aim is of course to maintain as much data as I can - one of the options on this menu is to a back up - would you suggest I do this before resetting (it offers system restore, or factory settings, or something called clean image?), or shall I rely on what I already have, which I think is a full backup, on external drive. I hesitate to go ahead with the backp option in CASE something goes wrong from this broken state, and I overwrite the backup I have (only 1 drive, no option to backup to a separate location).

At least when I ran the backup 2 weeks ago it was from a working machine, hence my hope that all I well and I will have lost nothing if I can reinstall that?

Hope that makes sense. Nervous about which restore option to use, and the risk of loss - hence advice welcome. In so far over my head :)
