I ordered a boxset of a particular series here:

Power DVD Classics - All your favorite TV series - www.powerdvdclassics.com

I will admit that I kind of felt that this website was shady, maybe that is the reason that I delayed ordering for a very long time, but I finally gave in to impulse, because I really want this series in my collection.

After ordering, I first received a notice that the charge on my CC was approved, and then some hours later that it wasn't. I didn't notice that the order numbers were slightly different. The last digit on one being a 0, and the second being a 1. I only noticed that the shipping address given was to the wrong state, and that a hidden $15 charge was included. I checked my account to see if the charge went through, and it does indicate that it is pending.

I sent a message to the seller to edit the shipping address, and to complain about the extra charge, saying that I would not pay it, and to cancel the order, if that was a problem. I received a response this morning, in which I was told that the shipping address would be taken care of, but there was no mention of the extra charge issue, but I thought to let it ride, because the amount debited on my account was $5 less than I had authorized. No shipping address was on either.

When I just checked my email, there were two more notices on this transaction, almost like the first two, first saying it was successful and then not. Again I checked my account, and the same pending charge remains as before.

This vender uses an independent tracking service, and when I checked with it, the first order number was shown as successful for the amount that I authorized, and the second was unsuccessful for the $15 that I didn't authorize. The tracking still indicated the wrong state in the shipping address.

At this point, I'm totally confused as to whether this order went through or not. I should probably cancel the order altogether, but I still want the series, and this is the only place that I have found it offered. I would like to call them, but they give no telephone number, and email is the only option. Usually I prefer email, but I feel that I really need to speak to them.

There is really no good reason for me to post this thread, except that I needed to express the vexation that I'm feeling, and possibly receive a response that helps to decrease it.

Hi seekermeister, don't worry about it, it does sound a bit shady, but nothing an email won't fix, just email them back asking for a telephone number or confirmation that the order was received and is processing to the correct address, just express your concerns and they will get back to you, it does mention on the FAQ that orders take 7-14 days to process so just bide your time and contact them with your worries.

I would cancel the order and call CC company to make sure they don't charge you.

If you didn't check them out on the BBB website shame, shame.

BBB has no listing of them.

Mike

Actually, it isn't exactly a credit card, it is a debit card, and I did call my bank, and was advised to wait to see what the outcome was, and to file a complaint with them, if there it didn't go right.

I doubt that checking them on the BBB would have worked, because during the time that I pondered over this, I found multiple website names with this offer, but it was obvious that from the website layout being identical that all were the same. The change in names may have been to derail the BBB checks.

My initial hunch about the shady nature of the website was more about the legitimacy of the offer, not about whether they would try to rip off their customers.

EDIT: No, they don't take PayPal, I wish that they did, but only credit cards.

EDIT 2: Why do you say that the policy in their FAQ is a bad security risk?

Yea I would refuse to do any payments with a seller who did not do transactions through paypal or deal with websites that don't offer it as an option at least, it sounds sketchy, I hope that you get your money back.

I agree, but I have a safeguard in place, I have a small secondary account that I use exclusively for online transactions, and only keep a small balance in it. That way that don't have access to my primary account.

Out of curiosity, why do you say is this dodgy? I have NEVER bought anything on my card that didn't ask for the CVV number. It is a standard way of checking that you are in fact the card holder.

When someone has the CVV they can charge what ever they want to your account until the CC limit cuts it off.
Also they can empty a debit account.
If that is their goal.

It is just like they have your debit card and the PIN # and can go to the local ATM.

So if it is someone you don't know doing as seekermeister did with limited funds is one way to limit exposure.

I do not think that having the CVV would change anything about whether they could wrongly charge the account, they could do that whether they had the CVV or not.

Don't know whether you have this over there, but here in the UK, when you buy something online on your card, you get taken to a "Verified by Visa" or an equivalent for MasterCard site, completely independant of the website you are buying from, (forget what it's called), where you input secure details held by whoever your card issuer is. At that point, Verified by Visa, always ask me for the CVV to confirm that it is my card.

Did you get that with this site? (IF you have it over there)

(IF you have it over there)
I rarely use the debit card, so I really do not know for certain, but when I have used it, I have not been taken to any additional website for verification. PayPal does something like this, but it seems that the method used varies, depending on who you are dealing with at the time.

Personally if you're feeling that uncomfortable about the transaction I would cancel it. Your intuition is saying something. I promise I know how it is when you REALLY want something.... but sometimes those are the things that take our guard down.... and we say "I knew it"

I wish you luck either way.

Newegg and Amazon use that. So do other sights but not all.
The ones that don't use Visa Verify you are giving it to the company you order from.

The websites that use Visa Verify have always posted they use it.

The ones that didn't list they used Visa Verify on the site that I have tried didn't use VVerify at checkout and wanted the CVV number anyway.
I ended up using Paypal or didn't buy from them.

Different layout, but notice the description:

It's not uncommon for a company to trade under a few different names (a bit shady), but the price difference is certainly interesting between the top two.

Best of luck with this
