Hey Everyone, new to this forum but if I posted wrong then please move it.

Alright I'm currently upgrading my computer alittle, started with a new motherboard, psu, cpu and graphicscard, but when i got the parts and started looking around I noticed that the mother board (MSI 770-C45) only had one IDE port, that probably is meant for the CD/DVD reader.

Since I have a harddrive wich doesnt have SATA I was wondering If I could just ignore the DVD reader and just go with the Harddrive on that IDE port without messing something up?

/Carl

LiquidSnake is right. But most older preconfigured Systems (especially from HP come with shorter cables that only allows the connection of 1 device
44pin_IDE_Cable_-_30cm_main.jpg

What you need looks like THIS
ide_cable.png
Where the blue port goes on the motherboard and the other two to you devices (HDD, CD, DVD, Burner etc.)
Remember to set the Jumpers on those devices correctly !

If you'd have to buy a new one anyways, I'd suggest one like this:
rounded_IDE_black_24.jpg

the rounded version makes for a better air flow, thus improves cooling.

oh this makes me feel welcome to the forums :) and I got the cable that allows me to connect 2 devices to the motherboard says slave and master on each connector, but got alittle confused again when your talking about putting one device on master and the other on slave. since the cable only allows me to connect it that way I was wondering if it has anything to do with the IDE ports on the devices? but maybe I'm just being stupid.. please fill me in with some more info about this way to connect multiple devices on one IDE cable.

There should be jumper settings on the drives. Set the hard drive jumper to the master position and the CD drive jumper to the slave position.

It's not so much about the cables as about the jumpers on the devices.

If you set the jumpers to Master on the HDD and to Slave on the DVD it doesn't matter how you connect the cable.

The pre assigned Master/Slave on the cable only matters, if you set the Jumpers on BOTH devices to CS (Cable Select)
