I have a laptop with windows 7 64-bit and 3 GB physical RAM installed but it says only 2.87 is usable. Isn't the 64-bit version supposed to allow over 3 GB usable?

may be your graphic adapter is using some of your RAM

So what would happen if I installed another GB of RAM? Will the usable amount go up?

Absolutely your available ram would go up. If you are using Home Premium Windows 7 you could have up to 16GB max. Although, I might add, that since it is a Laptop, you could probably not install this much.

It's actually kind of a shame that your computer came with a 64bit os and only 3gb of ram. you can and should totally add more and I second the thought that your graphics adapter (whether it's just the cpu or an dedicated gpu) is the one chewing on your memory.
