Only desktop background on startup

Our screen went out and we have been connecting our laptop to our tv screen. Yesterday I went to start a PowerPoint presentation it went straight to our desktop background. So now when I startup my laptop all I get is my desktop background and no icons or task bar. Even when I try ctrl alt delete it goes to a black screen and won't do anything. I've tried F8 on startup but it is just a black screen so I can't see what I'm doing. Thanks in advance!

No I don't know how to. I can't see anything on the screen so I'd have to use keyboard shortcuts I guess for everything.
