Only FireFox Can Access Internet

FireFox is the only app that can access the internet. No other application works. I try playing WoW or CS:S and I cannot connect to any servers, etc. The only game that seems to work is CoD:MW2 and any other apps that need access to the internet don't work. For example, I cannot download the iPhone OS4 update because iTunes tells me there's no internet connection or whatever. I called Asus customer support and (obviously) they have no idea what's going on with my computer

My firewall is off, I ran an anti-maleware program, registry cleanup, system restore etc etc etc and NOTHING works. Last resort is wiping the harddrive and reinstalling Windows 7, but I really don't want to do that...

in IE go to internet options and check to see if its trying to use a proxy server. If it is trying to use a proxy server turn it off.

It's turned off and I've turned it off in Regedit and changed the proxyserver key so that a proxy can never be used. I've even done the LAN settings thing where you set it to "Automatically Detect". Still doesn't work

I'm running Wireless btw

Can you access the Internet with IE, or any other web browser. It could be something on your wireless router blocking traffic. You could start by turning off the firewall on your wireless router and see if you have Internet access. Also a reboot of your wireless router and cable/dsl modem never hurts.

I would think that if you can access the Internet with both firefox and IE but not with other apps and since you have your windows firewall off it is likely that your router is blocking traffic. Or some other type of firewall installed on your system like norton Internet security or similar.

Well I just got home and booted up my laptop and now FireFox doesn't work. FireFox installed a new update when it opened and now it doesn't work. IE does...
I have no norton or anyting and the firewall is off. I'll try restarting the router.

Go through all your router settings and uncheck anything having to do with firewall. can you access the router with firefox and internet explorer?

I can't access my router, lmao. I use an AirPort and the "Apple AirPort Utility" cannot find the base station x]
Like I said, it seems like no application can see that there's an internet connection. It's not my router it's something wrong with my computer.

Check in IE to see if automatically detect internet settings is checked. It should be unchecked. See pic

Zigzag, I am running wireless...

It seems like whenever I update a program that was working it stops working. I updated CS:S with a new patch (it stopped working), updated WoW (stopped working) and I just updated FireFox (stopped working). Why is this?

Maybe you need to reinstall winsock. This is usully only a problem when you upgrade from Vista but it's worth a try none the less. :)

1. Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.

2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.

3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.

You never mentioned that you have done this. The help here is only as good as the description of the problem and the fixes that you have tried. ;)

If it were me I would have reinstalled by now.

I was able to fix the problem. I de-fragmented my harddrive, ran a registy cleanup program, uninstalled Norton and rebooted. Now my "fn+f12/13" doesn't work (increase/decrease volume).
