Only one tray for discs but have drives D and E.....linked to upgrade

For my Cds etc etc I have one input tray, but in My Computer there is a D drive marked DVDRW and E marked DVD. Will someone please explain how I could have both, please?

I am concerned, as I am attempting a In-place Upgrade, and no matter what, it fails while loading temporary files with error 0x80070005; could not create a required installation folder.

Is it possible that my problem with running the installation disc successfully lies with drives' existence, and the D: being the default choice for running my media?

Are you logged in with an Administrator account when trying to Upgrade ?
Searching for 0x80070005 it seems this error is usually a permissions error.

Do you use any programs that can create a Virtual drive such as PowerISO ?
I just "added" a Virtual drive with PowerISO.
It creates a "device" in My Computer (This PC), but it's not listed in Device Manager or Disk Management.
Are both of your DVD drives listed in Device Manager or Disk Management ?

I would run a System File Check (SFC) to see if there are any errors that can't be fixed.

In my example screen prints CD Drive (F) is a virtual drive, it's not shown in Device Manager or Disk Management.
I'm running Win 8.1 right now, but i believe Win 7 would work the same.

In Device Manager there are two optical drives, one being the one I use the other's description is "Roxio DVD-ROM Emulator SCSI CdRom Device". I'm thinking that must be E: in my OP. AFAICR there are no programs to create a virtual drive. I did install temporarily Freeisoburner however.

You have a virtual drive. Roxio made it up when you installed it. Just go into Roxios setting to get rid of it. Power Iso makes one by default, but during setup I always uncheck it, no need for a virtual drive.

Just use D

If you want to keep the virtual drive (I use mine for mounting ISOs), just rename the E: drive to an unused drive letter, rename D: to E:, then rename the former E: drive to D:.

I would do what AddRAM suggested and get rid of the virtual drive in Roxio settings and see if that allows you to Upgrade successfully.
You can add it back later if you find you need it.

Re-reading this thread you don't say if this a Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade.
I assumed you are trying to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10, but maybe i assumed wrong.
Is that what you mean in the OP by "In-place Upgrade" ?

Also, you didn't answer if you are logged in as an Administrator when trying to Upgrade.
