Hi,
New to this forum, hopefully someone has new words of wisdom. I've been running Virtual XP under Windows 7 for over a year. It worked as well as could be expected until the antivirus on the vxp expired and I upgraded it. Now I receive the above error message when I try to access the virtual machine. I've tried getting into safe mode (hitting F8 while xp is booting)...doesn't work. It won't let me force a shut down or do Ctrl+Alt+Del within XP (nothing happens when I try either). I've disabled the integration function...doesn't matter. The only thing I'm able to do is access the settings, which do nothing. The attached screen shot is what I get when I try to access virtual XP, however I'm unable to do anything on the screen, not even close it. Once I've tried to access the vxp the only way to close it is to cancel it from Win 7's task manager. I've noticed vxp isn't going into hibernation anymore, it always says it's running. I'm not able to force a shutdown (I've tried). Actually I don't care if I'm not able to get back into XP, I just need to get some files off of it. Can I retrieve files from the vhd? Any additional suggestions? Thanks for whatever advice anyone might have!

Hi Itsemeinaz, welcome to the Seven Forums.

That is a totally normal sign in dialog shown when the computer is locked. Simply type your password and hit Enter. The dialog shows the username XPMUser which is the default username when XP Mode is installed; when you installed and set up XP Mode that is the username you got. You also had to set up a password, XP Mode installation is not possible without setting a password for user XPMUser.

You can also force XP Mode to reboot by first closing its program window, then deleting file Windows XP Mode.vsv in folder C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines, and finally relaunching XP Mode. Notice that as AppData is a hidden system folder, you need to first enable showing hidden items in Control Panel > Folder Options to show it in Explorer, alternatively type %localappdata% in File Explorer address field and press Enter to access AppData\Local folder and browse further to Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines folder.

Hi Kari,
Thanks for your assistance! Unfortunately the screen shot I attached is for display only. The screen itself is totally non-functional. I can't type into the Username or Password fields and I can't select OK or Options. The only thing it lets me do is access the drop-down menus (Action, USB, Tools, Ctrl+Alt+Del), however the only function that actually does anything when I select it is 'Settings'

I'd already accessed the hidden files, but wasn't sure what to do with them. I was hoping I could open the .vhd file, but no such luck. Will virtual xp have to be reinstalled if I delete the .vsv file?

No. The .vsv file contains hibernation data, saved state of the XP Mode at the moment it was closed (hibernated). When XP Mode is launched it checks if the .vsv file exists. If yes, XP Mode is restored from hibernation to its last known state using the hibernation data, if the .vsv file does not exist XP Mode will perform a clean boot.

In my original post I'd mentioned XP isn't going into hibernation anymore, even if I end task from Win 7. Well.....it's not letting me delete the vsv file because XP is still running.
Somehow last night in messing around with it I got XP to finally go into hibernation and I thought hopefully I'd then be able to get back into XP. Nope. Now it's back to running and not going into hibernation. Unless you have a suggestion on how to close it, I'll mess with it again to get it back into hibernation. When I do, I'll try again to delete the vsv file and let you know.
