Right-clicking on a folder, not within it

One should be aware that 'Open command window here' is available when you right-click -ON- a folder name... and not by right-clicking within it. In other words, you cannot be inside a folder and right-click on the window background to get the 'Open command window here' menu item.

However, you -can- do so with the Open Command Windows Here as Administrator registry edit. When you have a folder open, you can right-click on the window background (not on a file), and the pop-up menu will have the 'Open Command Window Here as Administrator' option.

Odd

Odd, because I'm not getting that.
I have a new laptop and it seems like that worked on my old one, but the new one won't give me an 'Open command window here' if I right-click a folder background. Old was 32bit, new is 64bit.

Try with shift (hold) + right click to see if it does then.

It will not do this in the "Computer" window, or in a library window. Only in a opened folder's window.

Yes, it will show up with a Shift-hold right-click... on folder window backgrounds, but Shift is not necessary if right-clicking on a folder name. Seems like there must be two different places to set the Shift mode. I don't have to Shift-hold for right-clicking on a folder name... (unless I return the functionality to default behavior).

Start Menu,

The "Open Command Windows Here" and "Open Command Windows Here as Administrator" context menus are only for folder locations and not files.

Do you mean Run as administrator instead?

One should be aware that 'Open command window here' is available when you right-click -ON- a folder name... and not by right-clicking within it. In other words, you cannot be inside a folder and right-click on the window background to get the 'Open command window here' menu item.

However, you -can- do so with the Open Command Windows Here as Administrator registry edit. When you have a folder open, you can right-click on the window background (not on a file), and the pop-up menu will have the 'Open Command Window Here as Administrator' option.

In what version of windows are you saying this is possible? Every single time I do a clean install I always have to get in the registry and make some changes. Personally I like within directory to give non-elevated cmd access only so that if I do want elevated access I just have to hold shift. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the shift 'extended' shell menu a 64-bit windows thing (WoW64) or does shift give a likewise extended shell menu on 32 bit as well?

I just checked in my windows 8 that I'm booted in at the time of writing this and I am unable to right click a directory in neither the navigation pane or the explorer pane.

You are saying it is by default and that you do not need to access HKCR/Folder/... to add this 'right click a folder w/o shift' to give access to this command?

From my understanding by default:
HKCR/Folder/... has no command access "open this folder in cmd window" upon fresh installation
HKCR/Directory/.. has command access added but only accessed by extended shift menu.

Neither has any Elevated aspect to it.

If I am incorrect could you please fill me in on whatever version of windows you are using and whether or not it is a 32 or 64 bit..

ADDITION: I did fool around with a 3rd program to add some shell context menu features this time, but non were related to CMD, nor would I think that it may have removed something seeing as how simple this is to get a grasp on, with a little practice ;)

Thanks,
Paul
