Open/Save As Column Width

Just about every time I do a 'File Open' or 'Save As' command, the columns in the ensuing window that opens are too narrow. I usually have to drag the "Name" column to make it wider so I can see the entire file name.

Is there a way to fix the column width globally, to a preset width, regardless of what application I'd working in? Am I just missing something simple or do I need to edit something in the Registry?

Thanks on advance to whoever can help me solve this frustrating issue!

Sometimes the view settings revert to whatever the parent folders use. So try open/save as, adjust the size, go to the next folder up, adjust the size, etc, and then close the last window with the x. I can't reproduce your problem exactly, but I had a problem similar and that fixed it.

Thanks jeremebp for the reply.

I tried what you suggested. For instance, I opened MS Word, then 'Open'. In the ensuing window, I adjusted my column widths, then clicked up a level, did the same in that window, clicked up...changed, etc., all the way to the very end of the folder listings, until the up arrow grated out. Alas, no success.

I have a hard time believing that MS would not allow this to be modified and saved. I remember in XP being able to set a view and then have it apply to all folders. Maybe I'm not seeing what's in front of me, but I haven't seen any such option in Win 7.

Still looking for a solution.

Thanks!
