Open with using the Windows Shell Common file

I had a file that had that open with format, I mistakenly changed it to a Windows Media Player format, and now can not change it back.

I was thinking that I may have to reinstall the shell32.dll itself, but I saw the file on my computer. So maybe I should just find it in the Browse folder directory, then click okay and it's fix. Not sure completely where it is located or if that will work. Thanks for any help given.

Thanks for the help, just so I'm clear on as what is going on. When I right click a file, then select open with, the file I wan't is unable to go back to it. So with what you suggested, I am to download the REG as well as the .dll file. Then, merge the .dll file into the REG, correct?

Sorry If I seem little dumb or something, just wanted to make sure I do it right, rather than make another mistake, or possibly ruin something.

It's a .mkv file, I made the mistake of opening it in a wrong player when I didn't need too. So I'm just really wanting to put back things the way they are suppose too. Leaving the possible future to have less of a bigger mistake.

By default, .mkv files are not associated to be opened by anything in Windows 7. You would have to install a program that supports opening/playing .mkv files, and have that program's exe file associated to open the .mkv file. Some programs will do this automatically, or there may be a setting in the program that you could set it with. Otherwise, you would have to manually set the program to be the default program to open .mkv files.

What program were you using to open/play the .mkv file before you accidentally changed it to WMP?

The MKV file format can be played via Windows Media Player if you want, you just need the codecs for it.

Brink, you're right, and I know there is no default opening program for .mkv. It's just that the default view that I had was the "Windows Shell Common.." I was just wanting to put it back.

Well, for opening those files..I never had a program selected to play them in "open with" I've been using Media Browser in WMC (Windows Media Center.)

Usernameissue, thanks for the links. On another computer, I already have the Codec pack so that I can play .mkv files. The computer that is about this post currently using LAV codecs.

Adding file extensions

Hello Brink, Im so happy to come across this thread. Like Patrick I too have made an accidental change to some of my files. My file extension is an EDB file. It now wants to open with ADOBE and I need it to go to opening with window shell common.
Could you add EDB to the file list?

Hello Rosi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file below to unassociate EDB files that should sort this for you.
