I get a popup widow for damn near every program on my computer after a recent virus attack the gave me continious bogus security warnings.

I'm 99.9 percent sure I've killed off the virus but now I can only access some files by right-clicking and selecting "Run as Administrator". I've tried downloading the files I need to repair my Windows 7 Home Pro Pro but I can't get it to run. Everytime I try......Pop-up..Open With.

I've tried repairing by using restore and that hasn't helped either.

I'm waiting on a 2-disc package from Asus that contains Win7 but I really don't want to loose all of the data on my harddrive.

Any pointers?

Hello Frank,

It sounds like your EXE and/or LNK file type associations may have been messed up. You might see if downloading and merging the exe and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below may be able to help afterwards. They will restore the default associations for them.

That helped, thanks.
Still having trouble trying to get Defender to run. i get a pop-up that says there's a problem that's preventing the program from running and to restart my computer. Been there, done that, it doesn't help.

That's great news so far Frank.

I would recommend to forget Windows Defender and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) instead. It's much better, and will automatically turn off Windows Defender to have MSE be used by default when installed.
