I get a monthly listing in my email that comes as a spreadsheet. When I try to open it, I get the message that I do not have Windows Office 2010 installed and it gives me options to purchase, etc. I have another spreadsheet installed on my computer and would prefer to use it but I don't know how to get it to accept the list without having to store the listing and open the spreadsheet to read the listing.

I want to use the spreadsheet app that I have already installed. I'm familiar with it and don't feel that I have to learn a new app just to ead a spreadsheet that I've done for years on XP.

So you don't want to save it to your computer and then open it from there?

Then you have to ask for spreadsheets that are compatible with your application. Excel 2010 file formats are apparently not.

OK but it seems Microsoft compatible or else it wouldn't ask to install MS Office.

The solution could be as easy as to connect your spread sheet with your already installed application.
Please tell us
#1) what format are those spread sheets in (what's the file extension if not .xls).
and
#2) what's the name of the application you want to use.
And we'll go from there ;)

The spreadsheet is an .xls format and the app that I wish to use is Open Office. I've read this spreadsheet for years using Open Office in XP. When I get the popup that tells me to use Microsoft's app, it doesn't give any options to use another app.

Hi,

Please try this for me:

1. Right-click on the XLS in Windows Explorer
2. Select Open with
3. In the panel, select Other Programs
4. Browse down to find Open Office (assuming its installed)
5. Select it, and make sure to tick the check box as shown in the image below
6. Click OK.

Now double-click the XLS in Windows Explorer. Does it open using Open Office?

Regards,
Golden

Exactly...Golden showed you the way
You might have to click BROWSE in that window and navigate to your installed OpenOffice Calc.exe
That should do the trick.
Don't forget the checkmark (like shown in golden's pic) so next time you need to open any XLS you just double click it and you shouldn't be bothered anymore by any MS Office "commercials" ;)
