Hello !

Even if I choose Offline mode, Help of Excel 2010, or Word 2010 take a long time (5 seconds) to appear.

First you post this then another on Excel. My help file in Word (Office 2010 64 bit) opened in less then two seconds.

If you are looking for help post your system specs. If you are just coming here to complain then you will get no help, or someone to agree with you.

If you are only trolling then please go elsewhere, we do not need it here on Win 7.

Hello,

Thanks Lee,

First : Yes, I post also on Excel forum, but only because I realized that I haven't choose first the good place. I apologize.

Second : Windows 7, 32bits. Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1 Ghz

Third : I am not coming here to complain. I work daily with (fabulous) Excel and I am upgrading from 2007 till 2010. I believe that the problem which I meet is not normal and that it has probably a solution for which I honestly come to look here.

Fourth : Why you're putting words into my mouth ?

I reckon you were a bit rough on the poster Lee!! Help is of more benefit than an attack policy.

Office 2010 help on a core 2 duo processor and 32 bit Windows taking five seconds sounds good to me. I don't recall using it in 2010 when I tried it, but the help in 2007 on the computers at school can take over 15 seconds to open (all dual core or HT CPUs and Windows XP). Be happy it only takes five seconds. Having to wait 15 seconds is annoying.

Thanks Iffoar and Petey7,

Petey7, the help with Office 2007 take no more than one second for me.

But, in few days, I will bought Office 2010 and check if my problems encountered with Evaluation version remain. I am wondering if these problems come from the "Click to run" system.

I think the issue is just that 2010 is a little more resource hungry. I haven't tried the help menu yet, but if its fancier than in the previous version, that could also explain it. To be honest, he seems like you are just complaining about newer software running slow on older hardware. Yes, your fancy dual-core processor is today, what the Pentium 4 was a couple years ago. Also, you are using 32 bit Windows, which will run some programs slower than 64 bit. It's not a hard ware or software "problem". Its a matter of you not wanting to wait. If you want to speed things up a little bit, make sure you defrag your HDD once a week, empty temp folders, and consider turning off the superfetch service.

Thanks Petey7

I am almost sure that there is a problem. I often have to open and close files and it is very long, because these files contain ActiveX controls or OleObjects on sheets . I have very few resident programs and once my files are loaded, Excel 2010 works very well, faster than 2007, sometimes in a spectacular way. Why the opening of Excel is very slow when Addins are installed ? With Solver, for example, it take 8 seconds. (I am not the only one to have noticed it.). My computer run very fast (17 seconds to open Seven), I have MyDefrag in screensaver mode. In one week, I will bought Office. I will go back here to tell you the result.

You know the part were you said it runs faster than 2007 once it gets going? That is usually at the cost of the slowdowns you mentioned seeing in other areas. It is not unusual at all for newer software to require more resources than old software. The only problem is MS getting out of hand with some software and you being impatient. There might be some tutorials out there on how to speed up Office. It just seems like the program itself is bloated and slow. Beyond that I cannot see how anything else would cause that one program to be slow.

They don't have to be for a program to be slow. Have you tried my advice about defragging the hard drive, and emptying temp folders. If you think a virus is running in the background, by all means download, install, update, and run MalwareBytes. It's advised you empty temp folders first, and to ignore any hits that come from system restore. I still standby what I said before. 5 seconds to open is good for some stuff. Also, larger hard drive can take longer to find some stuff depending on where it is stored. 1TB for example, is great for storage but horrible for performance.

Sorry, I forgot that you said that. It using a lot resources was one possible cause. If you are using using the computer that has the spec in your system specs, unfortunately our computers are starting to become out dated. I still like my laptop a lot, but there are now computers that cost a lot less and can do a whole lot more in a much shorter time frame. It is those computers that MS makes Office software on and for. Not saying there is anything wrong with your computer, just that newer programs running slow is something we all have to deal with.

Jibse,
I don't know if this will help you but I've just installed office 2010 and found it rather slow and bloated to start. I then uninstalled all the associated programs with it as I only need word, powerpoint, excel and publisher. Now it runs as quickly as office 2003 or 2007 and the help file opens a lot quicker also.

Thanks Iffoar,

Which associated programs ? I have also only Excel, Word, PP and OneNote. I don't need OneNote, but I don't see a way to uninstall it. My Office version is an evaluation one. It is the same for you ?

Hello,

I have just installed the regular version of Office 2010 and all is perfect (no problems with help, no problems with ActiveX and OleObjects).
So, I think my hypothesis was the good one : the system one-click (with, perhaps, a bad internet connexion).

The way that the "Click to run" install works is probably the cause of this issue as it is set to install many non core functions, and their help, on first use.

This is due to the fact that most people do not use anything like all of the office suite, and thus have a fair amount of bloat on their system, following a full install.

Unfortunately as each user tends to use different functions this cannot be solved by removing functions

Over time a CTR install will settle down to work as well as a traditional install

Thanks Barman58,

I understand. Maybe it would be good that Microsoft gives this information at the time of the installation of the trial version ?

I was part of the initial Beta test phase last year and the information as to how the "click to run" delivery system runs was explained in quite a lot of detail.

I am surprised that it's not better explained in the retail package. I decided to install the conventional package when it went gold so was unaware of the changes.

I like the idea of the click to run as I often install office in the form of the essentials fully installed and the other options set to "install on first run" as this keeps install time and disk space requirements to a minimum.
