In the past, when using the Firefox browser, whenever I opened a hyperlink, it opened in a new window.

This suddenly doesn't work anymore. In both, the Firefox and Google Chrome browser, opening a hyperlink opens in the same window and gets rid of the previous website. And the backup button isn't even enabled to go back to the previous website, which disappeared with the hyperlink.

How can I fix this so that it always opens in a new window? Thanks in advance for any response!

Where exactly in Options can I make the setting that hyperlinks open in a new window?
In Basics, Personal Stuff, or Under the Hood and where exactly?

ananya0, try this. Click on Help, then Restart with Add-ons disabled. One of the options you will get is Disable all addons, you can choose this to see if an addon is causing the issue. If that is no help, you can repeat that and try the Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults.

Well, thanks, however both suggestions did not work.

But it helped me realize that I should make another test. I tested internet explorer, and this browser does make a hyperlink open in a new window.

However with both, firefox and google chrome, a hyperlink does not open in a new window. With my google chrome it never worked, and with my firefox it only worked before and does no longer work now.

Please help me solve this problem!

Thanks in advance!

You can try changing the setting in FF with the about:config options:

Insider Secrets: Firefox hacks - CNET Reviews

I am not familiar with Chrome at all as I only tried it for a few days before uninstalling it.

Which version of FF are you using? A Guy

Thanks. When I go to this link, which ends up at:
Insider Secrets: Firefox hacks - CNET Reviews,
and search for about:config for Windows 7, I see the two
downloads:
Auto Dial
Change Search Shortcut for Firefox
Which download should I use?

Actually I mostly care for solving the problem of hyperlinks
opening in a new window on Google Chrome.

Can someone help me?
Thanks for reading this.

I was not speaking to the downloads, since I can't say personally about either, but rather the manual about:config settings you can make too change behavior as listed in the article.

Links from other applications
When a link is sent from another application, such as when you click a URL in an e-mail, what should the browser do? There are three options: open the page in a new window, open the page in a new tab in the front window, or replace the current page in the front window.

The options for this behavior are shown at the top of the Tabbed Browsing panel in the Preferences window. If you ever feel the need to set this preference via About:config, look for browser.link.open_external. Setting this preference to 1 opens the link in the current tab and window, 2 opens it in a new window, and 3 opens it in a new tab in the front window.

Actually, in Firefox I just went to Tools > Options > Tabs and unclicked
"Open new windows in a new tab instead".
Now, in Firefox hyperlinks always open in new windows.

And I actually learned that before, when opening a hyperlink, I did not
lose the previous website, it just made a new tab for the new website.

Ok, thanks, everything is fine with Firefox now.

But how can we solve the problem of opening hyperlinks in a new window
with Google Chrome?

Ok, I now also realized that Google Chrome also just makes a new tab when opening a hyperlink. So neither in Firefox, nor in Google Chrome I lost the previous website when opening a hyperlink.

And I even start liking this better, having new tabs instead of new windows. It's like in Adobe Software, every new file is just a new tab.

So, at this point I do not need to know how to make hyperlinks open in a new window for Google Chrome. (Holding the shift key does not work.)

Thanks for all your supports.
