Opera 12 takes 15-17 seconds to start up-is there anyway

I can check Win7 64 bit to see what the problem is? I have Opera 12 installed on 2 other computers (one with Win7 64 bit and the other w/XP) and the browser opens within seconds. The delay is only happening on the wife's computer. I changed no settings on Opera when I installed the upgrade to 12 so I am guessing it is the PC that is causing the painful delay.
I un-installed it twice, installed it once to her SSD and then again on her HDD and there was no change in the startup delay-it is driving me crazy.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you upgraded from a previous version, maybe it's due to a setting or something carried over from the older version. Why not try a fresh install from scratch? You can do a "portable" install into a new folder somewhere and try if that copy starts fast.

I completely uninstalled twice and reinstalled from scratch twice

It did not change the startup delay.
What do you mean by "portable" install?
Do I need to completely uninstall the current SW and then re-install to a new dir or drive? I'm willing to try anything. A little clarification on Portable would help me out. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

The portable install is the option added to the installer back into Opera 10. When you run it, if you click preferences, you can choose to do a portable install (USB) and that will create a fresh copy of Opera in any folder you like (not just in a pendrive as the name suggest, but can be anywhere). That new folder installation will NOT touch any setting in the system, will not interfere at all with any other browser you may have (not even your existing Opera install) so it's good for testing.

You need to download and run the installer normally, not use the update option from the menu to get it.

Sorry but I am feeling especially thick this afternoon

I looked under pref's on my current installation and saw nothing that mentions portable install.
If you have the time, would you pls walk me through a portable installation on my wife's PC. Something like:

Download installer to....
Extract to.....
At what point will I see the portable option and where would I install it to? (USB thumb drive, etc. I have one so it is not a problem).
Thanks for your indulgence-I would really like to resolve this. It is bothering me no end.

It's not in the preferences menu on the current install. It's in the installer itself when you want to get a new copy.

Try this:
Go to their homepage and download the latest installer. Save it anywhere you want, like the desktop or some folder for easy access.
Run it normally (doesn't needs administrator rights).
When it finished extracting, click preferences.
In the "install for" field, chose "Stand-alone installation (USB)".
In the install path, chose any folder you like to put the new installation. It doesn't really needs to be a USB drive, but can be anywhere you feel comfortable with.
Click install and it will copy all the files. Note that it should NOT show an UAC prompt and if it does, check again as you're missing something.

With the new folder in place, you simply run it double-clicking on the executable. It will not interfere with anything else in the system, and you can carry the whole folder to somewhere else if you want.

Sadly, it did not improve the startup time. I downloaded the installer, then completely uninstalled the current Opera on the wife's computer.
I followed your instructions and used the USB option under pref's (I had no idea that was even there-a neat feature!).
I installed to the USB drive and clicked the .exe file. It still took 15 seconds to start up. This leads me to believe it is not Opera but something in Windows is dragging its feet, so to speak.
Are there any other options I can explore (that you are experienced/familiar with)?
I am not going to abandon Opera solely on this issue but it is aggravating. As I mentioned, I have an identical PC of my own that runs Opera 12 with no startup issues at all.

What else is being loaded on that computer? Check msconfig and compare it with your computer. My guess is something other than Opera is causing the delay.

You can also create a new user on that computer and see if Opera still loads slowly. If it doesn't, then there is something going on with the original profile.

I created a new user on her PC and Opera 12 popped up immediately so I will check our start up lists and see what is different that is causing her browser to crawl at startup. Thanks for the ideas and I'll post back when I have it figured out.

Good. You should also check the task manager and end unnecessary processes.

I looked at our startup/service lists and nothing stands out by itself. I have been using Windows since 3.1 and this is killing me. I normally troubleshoot any problems we encounter and get things corrected but I am at an impasse here.

Here is an event log that I copied-can anyone tell me what this signifies because I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Go into c:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming and rename the Opera directory to Opera-old

Then uninstall and reinstall and see what happens.

If you don't suspect anything, you should start disabling and ending user processes.

Here is an event log that I copied-can anyone tell me what this signifies because I can't make heads or tails out of it.

This event details the boot performance. Why did you pinpoint this event? I don't see how this is related.

I thought the USB install should have disproved that it could be an Opera profile problem.
