Opera browser

I recently installed Opera. The reason I got it was it has VPN built in. First let me say it is a bully when it comes to links.


I have one window in Opera (for Plex) that I keep open most of the day. The problem is when I click on any link, Opera closed the Plex window and opens on the link that was clicked on.


How do I get Opera to open a new window when a link is clicked?


I hope that is clear what I want to do. Thanks

It has been a long time since I last used Opera.

I think what you have to do is clicking the Webpage link with the mouse middle-button.

Depends what version of Opera that you have installed.

I am not sure what you meant by "clicking the Webpage link with the mouse middle-button". My mouse only has two buttons; a left and a right. I tried both of those and saw nothing about opening in a new screen.

The middle-mouse button is also known as the scroll-wheel. That is, the scroll-wheel function doubles up to provide a middle-mouse button.

If you press down gently on the top of the scroll-wheel, then it will "click", and that is the middle mouse button.
Clicking on a weblink in this fashion, should cause the browser to open the link in a new tab.

Like I say, it depends on which version of Opera you have installed, since this feature was only made available since version 58.

Also, it wont work if your mouse has no scroll-wheel/middle-mouse button.

Also, wont work if your mouse is programmable, and the middle-mouse button has been re-programmed to provide another operation.



As an alternative to this, CTRL key + mouse click or SHIFT key + mouse click should open a new browser tab, either in the background or in the foreground.

If a browser Tab opens in the background, then the Tab opens, but the current Browser context does not switch to the new Tab.

If a browser Tab opens in the foreground, then the new Tab opens and the browser switches to this newly created Tab.

I can't help with your issue, but you need to know that Opera is owned by the Chinese and that so-called VPN shouldn't be trusted. They probably monitor everything going in and out of the server. You're better off with a good legit VPN like one from Proton mail or VPN.ac.

You can also right-click the link and choose New tab or New window. Most browsers have that in common.

The Opera VPN was produced by a Canadian firm called SurfEasy. Once owned by Opera Software, now owned by Symantec.
Opera Software is still a Norwegian company, although, it is now majority controlled by a Chinese consortium.
