Operating system crash requiring full re-install

Hi thanks for looking,

Around a month ago i had a serious operating system crash where i was unable to move or use anything on my screen and this wasn't a BSOD. I restarted my computer and was prompted with the usual "This computer has recovered from a serious error" so i try to start it up normally but stays on the starting screen so another reboot i put in my windows 7 professional disc and try to repair but says that it is unable to repair. So i made a fresh install and this has happened twice since and i am unsure of what steps to take next.

The computer was bought and custom built January 2012, 1TB SATA HDD, 16GB DDR3 RAM, Intel i5, nVidia GTX 550 Ti 1Gb, Window 7 Professional 64-bit.#

I seem to recall that on each ocasion that the operating system crashed i was using Firefox so not sure if that may be part of the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need any more information please just ask

I will follow these steps later this evening, i did a fresh install yesterday and after installing the first set of updates the required reboot resulted in a repair menu on start up.

After this latest fresh install had you also installed Firefox? If no, then I think it can be ruled out as a contributing cause. That you're experiencing these issues immediately after a fresh install makes me thing of two possibilities - neither of which will make you happy (and I sincerely hope I'm wrong.)

It's possible that your installation disk is damaged or has become corrupt. Easy enough to see if this is the problem. You can download an official ISO from here and then burn it to a new DVD using the slowest burn speed you can. (A free product called ImgBurn is often recommended.) Just make sure you download the same version and bit-ness already on your machine.

The second thing is possible failing hardware. I know you said your machine was custom built in January 2012 and it's less than a year old. But if your previous fresh installs were not compromised in any way, chances are it's not a software issue. That pretty much leaves hardware. The two troubleshooting guides provided earlier by koolkat include hardware testing suggestions. The guides are definitely time consuming but have helped many to isolate their computer problems.

It could be the disk so that will be my first port of call, i will rerun a new disk off as mine is dated its a licensed copy i get with my university so ill try burning a slow copy. As for the hardware this was my initial thought so i will remove all components and use some compressed air to give better ventilation and repaste my processor.

Please post back with any other info no matter how inconsequential it may seem. Sometimes the smallest of things turns out to be the problem.
