Operating System Not Found ?

Hi,

I've a laptop using Mandriva Linux 2010.1, and i'd like to install Windows Seven, not on dual boot, i want just Seven. Problem is i receive a "Operating System Not Found" message when i try to boot from the install-DVD, and Mandriva launches from HDD.

I thought it was a broken DVD but he runs well on my other PC.

By the way, i was using Mandriva 2010.0, i've installed 2010.1 yesterday with a DVD. That DVD does not run anymore either. But i can read audio CD or DVD movies so it's not an hardware issue.


Can you help me please ? Thanks in advance. =)

PS : i can't use USB-stick.

Hello Eshelia,

You will have to format the drive to NTFS first. Because Linux is on it now, windows will not see a partition.

Now that i re-read your post i dont know if thats your problem. Sounds more like a disk problem.

No, i guess it's not a partition problem. When i first tried to install Seven, he asked me to reformat in NTFS. But my first DVD was corrupt, so i had to use my guarantee and change my DVD. But because my HDD was formated in NTFS, i had to reformat in EXT4 with Gparted and reinstall Mandriva Linux too. But since that, i've this "Operating System not found", with the Mandriva DVD or the Seven DVD.

Mandriva Linux boots fine with my HDD, so i think it's not a disk problem. Maybe a DVD lector problem ? But he reads Audio CDs and DVD movies just fine so...

do you have the boot order set for cd/dvd drive first then hdd?

I first tried with F8 at start then choose "CD". Then i tried to put CD/DVD in first. Same problem : Error then start with HDD.

If there's nothing at all you want to save on the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at the tutorial at the link below, this method over-writes everything, all the old code on the entire HDD and gives you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to.

One issue at a time, are you saying that the "Repair Disk" will boot the lappy?

The "Repair Disk" works, i mean i can do the "Command Prompt" thing with it. So i guess that's what do you mean by "he boots the lappy". :/

There must be something wrong with the Windows 7 install DVD, where did you get it from?

I bought it from my PC assembler, and it works with my other PC. And my Mandriva DVD who worked yesterday does not work today. :/

It may have to do with the other things on the PC.



If there is nothing on the HDD you need to save run the "clean all" it will remove everything from the HDD and then you should be able to boot/start the Windows 7 installer from the disk you have.

By the way, i'm not sure i understand the "100Mb boot partition" thing. It's facultative ?

The 100MB boot parition is added to A HDD by default when Windows 7 is installed to a "Raw, Unallocated" Hard Disk Drive and using diskpart to create partitions before the install starts will not allow the 100MB partition to be created.



Just do all the steps in the "clean all" tutorial and it will not be created.


Depending on the size of the HDD "clean all" could take a lot of time to complete so just be patietnt.

Are you sure that is a standard Windows 7 install disk and not something else, a standard install disk does not need an operating system to start-up.
