Optical output sending only stereo

I can't get my pc to output 5.1 audio through my spdif. My ht shows what is coming in, sound wise. I get 5.1 from my dvr, but not my pc. I'm running on board sound and video, my video card died. Please help. I have an Asus m4a78-em mobo. realtek hd.
