Vulnerability If you're installing a critical security update on your computer, caused by the software vendor's sloppy code quality, you probably wouldn't dream that your software vendor is trying to make some money out of the inconvenience.
And yet that's exactly what Oracle seems to be up to with its (sadly necessarily frequent) security updates for Java.
As Ed Bott explains in this excellent article, when the world was rushing to install an essential Java security update last week, the software vendor attempted to install a third-party toolbar and change your browser's search engine.

Yes, Oracle has chosen to enable the option to install the Ask Toolbar and meddle with your search engines. Why? Because of profit. They earn more commission, the more people they get to install the third-party software.

You wanted to install the latest version of Java because you wanted to protect yourself against potential attack by cybercriminals. But you have to be really careful not to accidentally install unwanted software like the Ask Toolbar at the same time.

This reminds me of my manager, she seems to always under staff the store on very busy days, just so she is able to earn extra commission.

Most people have Java uninstalled anyway, so this might be a decreasing issue in the future.

If you have to have Java you can get it from here,

and it doesn't come with the toolbar installer. Or at least the offline install version doesn't.

I don't have Java. I just though it was kind of cool. Installing a security update along with a security risk at the same time. If the Ask ToolBar was so good we all would be flocking to there front door to get it. Instead they have been trying to sneak in our backdoor.

Not to nag at ya LBB, but java has been doin that for over a year now. I have seen it since.....I wanna say jre6 update 10 I believe ( it may be earlier or later ). Just dont do the "click through" without reading. Ask will not be installed then. I haven't had any probs with java, but I am carefull bout what I do with my pc.

Umm, that has been there for quite some time, nothing new. (I'm one of those who need Java out of necessity rather than choice.)

I don't care if you nag; fine with me. I haven't notice it before because I haven't used Java for a long time. I do understand that some people need Java. I still think it's kind of goofy the two together.

I've been looking into it earlier and it's about $1 per toolbar install so they are making some pretty good money on their "free" software.

It has been there for quite awhile and I personally don't care as long as I am given the option to not install it. I only have a beef with vendors that don't give any option but install a bunch of stuff without your knowledge or consent.

BTW, for those of you who DL java, for whatever reason, how much did you have to pay for it? What's wrong with a company trying to recoup some of it's development costs?

Absolutely correct stormy I just installed JRE 7-u-13 on my step-daughter's computer. Not a bundle junk in site.

It's a conspiracy! The sky is falling! Give me a break. Oracle is already very profitable and I doubt it would make spike in their profit to do that.

Yes the do make lots of money strollin. Then if it isn't the money what is the reason for doing it. The Ask Toolbar is not the shinning light in the darkness we are all looking for.
