I had a spare half hour this morning and I used it catching up on topics on the forum that I had not read before. One I found interesting led to a fairly heated argument between two members that very nearly got personal. Luckily another member stepped in, parted the two contestants and they both went back to their corners to cool off. It seemed that one member was freely admitting to breaking the law as far as some software was concerned. It occurred to me that if that member had been a new member, say a seventeen year old, asking help in downloading iffy software and was quite proud of it I wonder how long he would have lasted before the "Sword of Damacles" had fallen upon him as it has for at least four others over the past few weeks?
My point is: On this Forum do we follow the Orwellian theme that "All men are equal, it's just that some are more equal than others" or the alternative " What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander"?

Depends on the time and situation.

Dinesh i'm sorry I must respectfully disagree

I haven't actually seen the post in question so this is very general

IMO, the senior members of this site must in fact be better behaved than the lower ranked members. the "Guru" badge carries alot of weight, and responisbility with it (I actually have no idea if the members in question are Guru's or not but the principle remains) we are seen as "authorities" on the site. How many times have you seen someone of a lower rank, say "Skilled" post a perfectly good answer. and a "Guru" comes in and posts something else and the OP automatically takes the "Guru's" advice?

We ALL have our part to play in making sure the rules are obeyed. How can we expect other members to play by the rules if we do not ourselves?

It's all down to what rules are broken, if the member has previously made a valuable contribution to the site and the mood of the staff member that deals with it.

Our rules can be flexed with common sense, to adhere to the letter of the law just wouldn't create a nice friendly community.

That's exactly what I meant in my previous post.

I know the thread and members you are talking about. I would like to say that both have proved to be real assets to Seven Forums, being respected senior members. The software discussed is somewhere in the grey area, it's possible to get it semi-legally, and there's quite a clear consensus that the makers of that software are misusing their proprietary rights allowing said software being used only in certain hardware setups.

That said, it's of course very sensitive issue to be discussed here. You have certainly noticed that quite a lot can and will be said between the lines; just read some torrent or grace period related threads. I believe the other members tried to stop that discussion before it went beyond the point of no return

IMO, John, Shawn and the staff are doing remarkable job, trying to find balance and keep Seven Forums legal, respected and valued by all parties. The more I read these forums, the more respect I have for them.

There's a reason why the Seven Forums was voted as the best Windows 7 website 2009.

IMO that debate wasn't actually that out of order.... certainly not banworthy. I suppose it was heading that way but they were seperated and made it up.

Just for the record I saw nothing wrong with the debate other than it might have got personal. I raised a different slant in my original post. Still it seems to be yesterdays news now so there seems little point in persuing it!
