OS error & restoring a backup

Thanks for any help with this.....

My flatmate lost my windows 7 installation disk, now I've had a OS error, where my system keeps on asking to restore system... I have backups on both the secondary hard drive & an external... I cant find the disk & now have another installation disk, if I was to install new Os, could I then use a backup to restore where I was previously?

Press the F8 key repeatedly at boot up or use the Startup disk.
