I have been keeping up with the 32 bit builds. Until I decided to upgrade my computer.

All the new components and configurations worked fine on 7022 32 bit.

But I tried a new re-install on 7000 64. It worked okay for a while then it would start freezing. After a while the system would kick back in as if nothing had happened. Till a few minutes later it would freeze again.

This cycle continued.

I don't know what the problem could be I kept all my drivers up to date as far as I was aware (not that the freezing made it easy).

New components:
ASUS P5Q pro motherboard

Any other details I thought might help.
5 GB ram installed.
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GS
" " 6200 (Yes I have a triple monitor setup)

Hi Devozade and welcome to the forum!

Please check the event viewer for clues as to what's causing the freeze up.

It would also be great if you could take the time to fill in your computer specs in your profile for completeness and easier for us to help diagnose the problem.

One thing pops to mind in your story though, please make sure that all your drivers are 64-bit versions.

Cheers ;)

For now I have gone back to 7022 32 bit as that's the only stable OS I can get for me atm.

The 64bit driver thing, may have been an issue. I had a driver disk with my new motherboard for vista/XP. TO get it to work I had to set a compatability mode. Could that have interfered with the 32/64 bit drivers?

And what the heck is with the post above? o_O

I'm sorry if my post bothered you...

No, I think he's referencing a deleted post by a pr0n spammer. He hit up couple of threads before the mods caught on to him.

hi there, I have the same motherboard as you!

Seems like an odd number for RAM, I am assuming one is a 1gig stick? try taking that out. From my experience its best to keep the RAM in each module the same brand/type and size. Let me know if that helps!

Moved onto 7048 64 bit now. I installed all drivers etc and removed that 1GB stick. Now I have 8GB.

I was working fine until a long while after I had installed everything. I was totally stumped.

Nothing fishy in the event viewer. However I did notice that during this freezing time the CPU went into overdrive and had large percentages in use. But I didn't see what programs caused it. The most usage was about 2% by a program.

I did notice that Ctrl, Alt, Del was responsive during this time, but one going back to the desktop it would freeze on a black screen for a while.

Also when it became responsive My primary and secondary monitor were back fine (on the Nvidia 9600 GS) however the third on my other card was not, it was still black until you used programs on it, or selected areas of the desktop, they would become visible again.

So for now I have disabled that monitor and that card. I was just wondering whether that is the problem and because it's a PCI graphics card only (Not express).

It should not be the card, it supports windows 7 minimum specs (directx 9.0c + 128mb minimal onboard RAM). Although, it could be the drivers for that card, I know nvidia has windows 7 beta drivers, however do those work for that card?

You mentioned you formatted, but said the monitor problems happened previously, just for clarification, is it still causing that problem? Or is everything ok?

Plug in that 1 gig RAM stick, see if your CPU "freezes" again, if thats the case then its the mixed RAM, I would almost bank on it.

I have reactivated the graphics card and monitor.
So far going fine.

I'd rather find a good situation where I dont get freezing than try to get it back.

It may be that odd stick. I can't quite remember the order I tried my "fixes" in.

EDIT: Okay, with only the re-enabling of my teriary monitor and the secondary graphics card the freezing came back. I didn't touch my memory, still at 8GB.

Also I have NVIDIA's Windows 7 64 bit drivers installed. So I don't know what's up here.

Try another video card if you can, or turn off aero, see if that helps.

May I ask if you have an external HD attached to your computer, or any external device that's being used when this occurs?

Whenever I transfer files to my Western Digital 500GB external drive, there's a 50/50 chance that my computer spikes to 98-99% CPU usage, until I reboot.. maybe these problems are similar? It's rather annoying.. haha
