Other than Samsung, what other monitor brands offer software control?

I think you need to read logicearth's reply one more time. In game brightness/video card brightness settings is completely different from monitor brightness settings.

If I set my monitor brightness settings to 28, it makes no difference how I change my video card or in-game brightness settings.

I never said I needed very high brightness settings, just a easy way to switch between reading mode and gaming mode, which other members have already provided a solution.

OK, back to the original question, is there something wrong with Samsung's Magic Tune, that makes you want to skip Samsung for this new purchase?

I love Samsung, I'm currently using two Samsung monitors, a 24" and a 22" and I'm looking to switch the 22" for a 27" IPS panel. At the moment Samsung doesn't offer a 27" IPS panel at the price I want to pay (~$600-$700), at the same time I don't want to lose the ability to switch brightness levels/profiles on-the-fly through software. The only 27" Samsung that's available now is the SAMSUNG Series 9 S27B970D for $999 on Newegg, but for $999 I'd rather pay a little more for a Eizo monitor.

I'm currently researching Dell's U2713HM, HP's ZR2740w and HP Pavilion 27xi.

Way too much for that little jump for me, but I am satisfied with my 23" WS, plus 24" portrait monitors, both LED, one IPS.

In your case then I would just plow through all the major manufacturer's websites to trim the shopping list down and perhaps use pcpartpicker.com once you do for ease of online shopping.

I got my portrait monitor through bestbuy special order though, they were hard to find, but loving it especially at $260 cost.

I understand the cost for climb up to monster resolutions, but for just 3" 2560x1440 is going to be too eye straining for me, I'm happy at 1920.

It should be noted those monitors have a 2560x1440 resolution, so it's more than just a little jump.............and excellent screen quality. I have seen some recent Dell 27" 2560x1440 monitors for around $600-650.....it may have been the 2713HM the OP is researching. Those Ultrasharps are probably the best monitor for the money with the panel quality, build quality and features......although I like Samsung monitors too.

A friend of mine uses that on his 27" iMac it adds a unnatural tint to the screen that I don't like. I'd rather use native monitor software (Dell Display Manager, MagicTune, HP My Display) to adjust brightness.

I'm most likely going with a Dell. Can't afford a Eizo

I just discovered yesterday that Monoprice is carrying 30" LG IPS panels for $797.50 and 27" IPS panels for $474.17. I'm so tempted to give it a try, even without the monitor control software.
