"Other User"

I have been looking around for days for a solution to this problem... I have seen other people with the same issue but no one seems to have an answer to it... I'm hoping you guys can help!

I am setting up Windows 7 for a computer lab and want them to just type in their username / password. I turned off "remember last user" and everything was working fine. Then all of a sudden I started having to click "Other User' to get to the login screen. So now you turn on the computer, click Other User then you can login... Really annoying. I have a separate lab that I setup and its working just fine without the Other User.

I tried a System Restore back about a day and when the computer came back up it was fine, but as soon as I logged in again it started doing the Other User thing again.

Any ideas?

Type secpol.msc in the Start Menu Search Bar and hit Enter. This will open the Local Security Policy editor. Navigate to Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.

Right click "Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name" > Make sure it is Enabled
RIght click "Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL" > Set it to Disabled

Reboot, login, reboot, login. That should work.

It's already setup like that. It doesn't show the last user, it only shows the "Other User" button.

Did you disable the Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL?

I am not as versed in this area. but .... Maybe it is the Fast User Switching?

Turn off (if it is on) and then Login might go straight to username entry.

Or check first on your good configuration to see if it is On or Off....This is probably not the issue, but something good to check I guess...



Go to gpedit.msc
Go to Local Computer Policy > Administrative Templates > System> Logon
Find "Hide entry points for Fast User Switching" and set to Disabled


If you disable this and anyone leaves the lab without logging off, you will have to do a logoff command from cmd to get thier user out: shutdown -m \\<computer-name> -l

after changing those parameters, click Start > Type gpupdate.exe > Hit Enter > Restart

I would not recommend it, but if you have somewhere to test or can make a backup of the registry, you can try this: Windows 7 login screen only showing last logged-on user and “Other user” « Tech That!


I had been looking a little and this looks like the best description of what you are seeing. Be cautious though. editing the registry is not advised.

No go. I am noticing that some of the group policies aren't allowing me to edit them and it isn't in a OU that has any policies assigned to it... I suppose I should just reformat it.

Yeah. I wanted to figure it out because I am scared the other lab might pop up with it

Maybe the way that the "don't show last user" was performed affected the logon display...? don't know...

Well I tracked it down to a program called SSRPM that we use for students to reset their passwords without bugging us It added a little "Forgot your Password" button to the login screen and that seems to screw it up. I noticed I was 1 version behind so I downloaded the newest version. We'll see what happens... Again, thanks for your help!
