Out-of-Band Release to Address Microsoft Security Advisory 2963983

Known issues and more information about this security update

The following articles contain more information about this security update as it relates to individual product versions. The articles may contain known issue information. If this is the case, the known issue is listed under each article link.
  • 2964444 Description of the security update for Internet Explorer for systems that do not have security update 2929437 installed: May 1, 2014
  • 2964358 Description of the security update for Internet Explorer for systems that have security update 2929437 installed: May 1, 2014...
Windows Update on 2 systems suggested and successfully installed this KB2929437 patch for IE9 on each. But WU on a 3rd system running Windows 7 doesn't find or suggest it at all.

I downloaded it manually, but my system replied:
"The update is not applicable to your computer"
Then I tried to install 2964444 from the link quoted above, and got the same error message.

I can't find any other instances of this issue on the net. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this?

It would seem from the information provided by MS that the requirement for 2929437 to be installed before the installation of 2964358 (or alternatively for 2964444 to be installed instead of 2964358 is for IE11 only, and that users of IE9, for example, should merely install 2964358. That's what I've done on my first machine with IE9 and so far so good. I'll do the same on my other machine when I next use it.

Certainly it's the case that both 2929437 and 2964444 are applicable only for IE11.

The various requirements are set out here:-

It took a bit of looking because every time you click on a link for IE9, Microsoft (MS) wanted you to download IE11. :(

Once you have it you're in for a bit of work. Download Internet Explorer 9 from Official Microsoft Download Center

This Slipstreaming Internet Explorer 9 with Windows 7/2008 R2 Service Pack 1 DVD/Installation Media? - AVIRAJ AJGEKAR'S BLOG... - Site Home - TechNet Blogs is a fancier version of the TechNet Library version: Internet Explorer 9 Preinstallation Techniques

In the beginning of the Library link it offers a way to extract the .cab file, whether you want or need to do the rest is your decision.

Preinstalling Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

You can preinstall Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7 by slipstreaming Internet Explorer 9 into the operating-system image.

  1. Install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) that matches your local computer configuration.
  2. Copy the .wim file that contains Windows 7 to a location on your local drive. For example, C:\Slipstreaming\Win7x86ENU\install.wim.
  3. Create a folder for the mounted image. For example: C:\Slipstreaming\Mount.
  4. Download Internet Explorer 9 and put it in a directory in the C:\Slipstreaming directory. For example, C:\Slipstreaming\IE9-Windows7-x86-enu.exe
  5. Open a Command Prompt window and extract the cabinet (.cab) file from the Internet Explorer setup executable, by typing:

    <Path_to_IE90_Setup> /x:<CAB_File_Location>

where Path_to_IE90_Setup is the location of your Internet Explorer 9 setup executable and the CAB_File_Location where to store the extracted .cab file.

    For example: C:\Slipstreaming\IE9-Windows7-x86-enu.exe /x:C:\Slipstreaming\IE9Win7x86ENU

Important! You cannot extract the x64-based Internet Explorer cabinet files on an x86-based computer. Instead, you must extract the cabinet files on an x64-based computer. However, you can, extract the x86-based Internet Explorer cabinet files on either an x86-based or x64-based computer.
This link has documents and several Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) tools for Windows 7: Windows Automated Installation Kit - Search Microsoft.com

Off topic:
Thank you for the above Excellent support! (I wanted to + Rep but I believe it's unavaiable in "News" forum)

The blog post itself is invaluable, I learned a few new "tricks" (found IE9 pre-requisites without having to search for it/them, ty!) I have most of the tools (WAIK,SIM, etc) already installed and several ISO's to work with (clean, clean w/IE11, up-to-date w/IE11 using SIW2's excellent guide. As for the IE9 cab, I think I might find one already compiled @MSFN.org, if not I'm gonna give Wincert's WinToolkit MSU to CAB Converter a "go" (I use WTK to tweak/add themes, drivers etc alongside SIW's script)I also have several autounattend.xml's w/ different fearures/flavors/partition schemes etc. Thanks again for the post/info, good loking out!

We now return to your regularly scheduled topic: OOB release to Address...
ETA
: IE9 MSU installer found here.

Boy, talk about a mess! I was originally offered kb 2936068 as checked but didn't get it done right away, then by 4/29 was offered kb2952664 as unchecked. I still put off installing most of my updates 'cuz things seemed to be a mess & now I just checked to find 2936068 is gone, 2952664 is checked & kb2964358 has been added as checked!

I think one of our resident gurus should take over the MS Update dept. :D
