Outlook 2007 connection to Gmail intermittent

This is a new installation of Outlook 2007 on a refurb Lenovo T5100 running Win7.

My wife uses Outlook 2007 to access her Gmail using POP3. When she was on XP and using Outlook 2000 it worked fine. Following the transition hitting "send/receive" only works intermittently. The mail eventually moves, but she can't predict when it will be able to connect. I just tried to recreate the error message to paste it here, so of course it's on its good behavior at the moment and is playing nice. This morning she was complaining that it wasn't working. I'll add the error message to this thread when I can capture it, but thought I ought to get my question in the queue in case this is something familiar to members of this forum.

Note: Connectivity to the outside world is good, and no other apps are having a problem. She can connect to Gmail with a browser and see the messages that she can't download. My Lenovo Win7 machine, on the same network, works fine with Gmail, but my mail client is Pegasus, not Outlook.

I finally got my wife's machine to throw the error again, so it's attached. It appears simple enough, but it makes no sense. She's seeing this many times a day, often many times in succession, while browser connections to Gmail have no issues and my connection to Gmail POP3 and SMTP servers works fine from the same home network. Something's not right with Outlook 2007.
