Solved Outlook 2010 reading pane zoom default

I find the 100% setting for reading emails in Outlook 2010 too small and would like to set 150 or 200% as a default but I can't find any facility for this and I have to adjust the setting manually every time. Can anybody advise me please?

You have two options for doing this:

Option 1:

• Create a new email type something and go to the "zoom" feature on the top right.
• Select the percentage% you want the fonts to be displayed at.

Note: :note: The fonts may not appear large when you are viewing them on the reading pane or double click open the email. For that view you will have to always manually zoom it yourself on the right corner in the bottom but you will be able to see the fonts large when you hit reply after doing the 2 points mentioned above.

Hi Kool. Thank-you, yes, I had actually managed to find that setting and adjusted it to 200%, but I didn't want to change the overall DPI settings in order to save having to manually zoom on new mail because is messes with such a lot of webpages and has text overdrawn on text. I could reduce the monitor settings also but again it's not what I was hoping to find.

as far as I can tell this only allows you to change the program text etc and not the reading pane default values but I may have missed something

Are we sure this isn't handled by the default Windows font sizes? It is, after all, a Microsoft product.

Under Windows search bar, type, "Make text and other items larger and smaller". I can't test for you first. No Outlook on my home PCs.

Thanks James, but it produces problems with web pages scrambling text and also increases the size of screen icons. I simply wanted to set the reading pane default size to something larger than 100% when reading new emails rather than have to keep using the slider every time but it seems that it is not an option.

Back in my XP days there was complete control over appearance and display, allowing icon spacing adjustments and window colour schemes and etc. This allowed me to increase text size using the aforementioned system. then re-adjusting icons back to appropriate sizes. This doesn't seem to be available in 7. Is it hidden somewhere?

I think the tool you're after is found by following these steps:

1. Right click on the desktop and going to personalisation.
2. Then click on windows colour
3. Then advanced appearance settings

This brings up the windows colour/font size dialogue as seen in windows XP. I think this is what you were after.

However, I don't think it will solve the issue. My mum has a large 1080p monitor and needs the font bigger. She has set the DPI to 125%. This does increase the size of the font in every program so will increase the font size in outlook 2010. I see you have a large monitor, the same size as her's in fact (22") and web pages have no issue displaying with 125% DPI.

I have been having the very same problem and have tried all sorts of things, i then came across a small program that fixes this problem, you can set the zoom level in the reading pane & it keeps this as the default, im currently trying out the 14 day free trial but so far it works perfectly, the only thing is that in Trial mode it takes a while for outlook to open and then you have to agree to either carry on with the 14 day trial or agree to buy, (very small price $4.95), but im sure this slow start up will stop when i purchase the program.

Thanks Pete, it may well be the answer but I am hoping to get a bit of feedback from the forum regarding this patch before installing it. Is this a reputable company? Can I assume there won't be any nasty surprises around the corner? The business of slowing Outlook down is curious: I have to declare that Outlook already seems terrible sluggish a lot of the time and displays distinct faults on a regular basis like freezing after I move an email to an archive folder. Anyone out there help?

As far as i know they are a good company, they seem to specialize in making products for the office suite.

There has been no nasty surprises and i have even managed to get the icon to move so that its on the main "Home" Ribbon, this allows you to turn the zoom on & off if you want to.

i think the only reason the outlook is slow to start is that its checking to see if the addin has been paid for or is still in trial mode.

you also get two years of free email & Phone support.

Thats about all i can tell you really, like i said ive had no problems with it & its working fine, i also tried one from another company that had a trial, that was $9 i think but that didnt work as i expected so i removed it.

Hope all this helps, i would give it a try but the choice is yours.

No problem, but try the 14 day trial first, at least then you havent lost anything.

Just out of curiousity how long does outlook take to open, mine opens in around 4 seconds, but with this addon it takes around 6-8 seconds.

1.5 seconds. Because I use an SSD for the OS, most programs open rapidly. Photoshop CS4 opens in 12 seconds for example. I keep Outlook open and reduced on my second screen all the time so that would not be an issue for me.

LOL, i thought you said it was sluggish or do you mean when you are using outlook, not its start up time?

Yes, occasionally when I close emails and more often when I drag them into archive folders they freeze on the screen. They vanish when the screen is refreshed but it is irritating because everything else on my system works magnificently, even Word 10.
